Musical
One of the biggest highlights of the term for many Talara students is their chance to step into the spotlight and bring Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR to life! Our talented performers are eager to see large, enthusiastic audiences who will bring energy and excitement to the shows. Tickets are now on sale via the official link:
A huge thank you to our dedicated staff, P&C and parent volunteers who are working tirelessly to add those final touches and make Talara’s first-ever musical truly sparkle.
Celebrating Our Incredible Ancillary Staff – School Support Staff Week
At the heart of Talara’s vibrant community is a remarkable team whose dedication and talents often go quietly unnoticed—but whose impact is truly extraordinary. During School Support Staff Week, I want to celebrate our amazing ancillary staff: teacher aides, administrative team, school officers, and technical officers.
Our teacher aides are classroom champions. They provide invaluable one-on-one support, tailor learning experiences, and nurture confidence in every student. Their passion for education and their ability to connect make a huge difference in unlocking potential and celebrating student progress.
Behind every smoothly run school day is our incredible administrative team. With organizational wizardry and warm smiles, they keep everything running seamlessly—from managing complex schedules to supporting families and staff—creating a calm, welcoming school culture for all.
Our school officers play a vital role in keeping our college safe and welcoming. Their dedication to maintaining high standards of health, safety, and school grounds ensures that Talara is a well maintained and inviting place for everyone.
And we can’t forget our technical officers, whose behind-the-scenes expertise keeps our classrooms connected and technology running smoothly. Their quick problem-solving and innovative support help ensure that teaching and learning continue without interruption.
Together, this extraordinary team works tirelessly and with heart, contributing to the positive outcomes that make Talara truly exceptional.
A special shout-out to Judy Hine, a beloved teacher aide who has been an essential part of Talara for 19 years. Judy is retiring this week, and we thank her deeply for her loyal service to our students, staff, and community. We wish her all the best in her next adventures!

Prep 2026 Enrolments
If you have a child starting Prep in 2026, please submit your enrolment application by 17 September 2025. Timely applications help us:
* Connect with your child’s early learning providers to support a smooth transition
* Ensure your child can participate in all Prep transition activities
* Plan class structures and student numbers to provide a settled start to the school year for all students in 2026.
Thank you to families who have already submitted their enrolment documentation—it’s greatly appreciated!
Father’s Day Stall
A big thank you to the P&C and our wonderful volunteers for coordinating the Father’s Day Stall this week. We hope all dads, step-dads, carers, grandads, and loved ones who step up into parenting roles feel truly appreciated and spoilt with the thoughtful gifts this weekend.
Use of School Facilities – Survey Update
Thank you to the 52 parents who completed our recent survey. Of those respondents, 54% support allowing after-school play in the Prep playground, Year 1-2 playground (behind the hall), and on the northwest soccer goals on the oval, with play finishing at 3:05pm in all locations. Families who choose to utilise this time on the school grounds, are kindly asked to ensure that they exit the school grounds at 3.05pm so that our Helping Hands – Out of Hours School Care team have unencumbered access to all our school facilities that they lease after school. There are rigid child protection protocols that the Helping Hands team must observe which means additional adults and students not in Helping Hands care must have vacated our play spaces prior to afterschool care students accessing.
Please note: After-school play is only permitted for students supervised directly by their own parents in close proximity. The P&C has endorsed a trial of this proposal until the end of the year, with a review at Term 4.
Health and safety considerations remain our top priorities. To keep pathways safe during dismissal, ball games are not allowed in the main school areas after school, and the mini soccer field in the Prep area is off-limits after school—please limit play activities to the larger Prep playground area.
Before school procedures remain unchanged, with students gathering quietly in their year level court areas for calm activities like reading, chatting, card games, or laptop use.
Parade of Excellence
Let’s come together to celebrate our students’ achievements at the Parade of Excellence for Term 3 on Monday, 15 September. This special assembly will showcase the achievements of our students over Term 3 and will feature special awards for our outstanding Mathematicians. The Parade of Excellence will be held in our school hall at 9am.
Student Free Day
A reminder that Friday, 5 September is a student free day. Regular classes will not be held, and the school will be closed.

P&C News
With less than two weeks to go until the Colour Explosion Run 4 Fun, the excitement is continuing to build for what promises to be a vibrant day filled with colour, laughter, and joy.
A gentle reminder:
- A minimum of $15 funds raised via the online portal is required for students to participate on the day.
- Permission forms must be completed via QParents.
We would also love to see as many volunteers as possible join us on the day. If you are able to assist, please follow the volunteer link via our Facebook page to nominate your preferred time. Volunteers who assist all day will be provided with lunch, and all helpers are invited to join in the always-entertaining Parent Run held during second break.
While we still have a way to go to reach our ambitious fundraising goal, we are sincerely grateful for the families who have already contributed so generously. Your efforts are making a meaningful difference. Funds raised will go directly towards essential repairs to the Year 1 & 2 sandpit cover, ensuring our students have a safe, sun-protected and enjoyable place to play.
To keep the motivation high, we’re thrilled to share some of the amazing incentives on offer in addition to the Australian Fundraising prizes:
- For every $100 raised, students will receive a ticket into the draw to win a brand-new kids bike from 99 Bikes, proudly sponsored by MJB Fabrication.

- Top Class Fundraisers will win the honour of dressing up their Deputy Principal! Last year’s outfits were wild and unforgettable, and we expect nothing less this year.
- Prep – Year 2: Mr Hardy
- Years 3 – 4: Mr Bathersby
- Years 5 – 6: Ms Walton
- Highest Individual Fundraiser will have the chance to dress Ms Cutter and set the theme for the Term 1 Disco.
- Raise $250+ and you’ll go into the draw to SLIME the Principal – yes, glorious gooey slime!
We extend a huge thank you to our Talara P&C community. Your enthusiasm, commitment, and generosity are what make days like this possible, and we are truly grateful for every contribution.
P&C Meetings
Our next meeting will be held in Week 3, Term 4, at 6:30pm in the Admin Building. P&C meetings are a wonderful opportunity to connect with other families, engage in meaningful discussions, and gain insight into the activities that make Talara such a special place. We warmly welcome all members of our school community to attend.

EEP Term 3
Extension and Enrichment Program at Talara Primary College
Here’s a recap of our EEP day on Tuesday 19 August.
Our Year 5 & 6 EEP students thoroughly enjoyed our STEM focused day as they showcased their exceptional skills in collaboration, problem solving and robotic coding.
Students were challenged with learning to code a SumoBot ready to battle. Throughout the day, students explored online tutorials to develop the required skills to control movements using the Gyro sensor, control movements using the distance sensor, and control movements using the colour sensor.
They worked collaboratively to build and then code their SumoBot. They tested their SumoBots and made refinements to their design before they went head-to-head in the battles.
The Year 3 & 4 EEP students this term travelled around the world, stopping at some well-known locations, completing a STEM challenge each time we landed. We used our passport to transport ourselves to the The Pyramids of Giza, Cradle Mountain, Amazon Rainforest and The Great Wall of China. At each location the students worked in teams of three to solve a STEM challenge problem, with the highlight of the day definitely being this challenge at The Great Wall of China:
An army is preparing to attack the Great Wall of China. You are the design engineer in charge of catapults. You are to design and make a catapult that can shoot a marshmallow at the model of the Great Wall of China. You can only use paddle pop sticks, blu-tack and rubber bands.
The students also used an iPad app called Freeform to record their thinking as well as, taking photos and videos of their developed solutions.
The students were challenged to work collaboratively and stay in the thinking, designing and problem-solving space all day, working solidly for nearly five hours!
The Year 1 & 2 EEP students took part in a series of special STEM challenges filled with creativity, problem solving and design challenges. Their mission…To rescue the legendary ‘Sir Isaac Squirmalot’ who was no ordinary worm, but the world’s greatest inventor and explorer, known for his wild contraptions, clever puzzles and hidden treasures!
Using this story, the students worked in teams to complete six different STEM missions, each designed to challenge their critical and design thinking, collaboration and resilience. Every challenge earned them part of a secret code bringing them one step closer to cracking the final code needed to unlock the cage holding Sir Isaac captive.
To finish the day, students teamed up with adults to design a one-hole mini-golf course, complete with obstacles, aiming to sink the ball within five shots or less.
It was a wonderful day of hands-on learning, where students were not only highly engaged but also challenged to think creatively, work collaboratively, and persist in solving problems using their design thinking.
Congratulations to all our wonderful EEP students. It was wonderful to welcome the year 1 students to this round of EEP. We look forward to seeing the Semester 2 EEP students back again on Wednesday 5 November.

Student Council Free Dress Day Term 3 Week 10
On the last day of this term, students will have the opportunity to come dressed in colours of green, yellow, red, black and white that represent the colours of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe flag. We kindly ask for a gold coin donation that supports our beautiful and very deserving sponsor child Gracious Banda from Zimbabwe. In joint partnership with VANA Zimbabwe, Talara Student Council annually participates in the Zimbabwe VANA Sponsor Child Program providing financial support that ensures Gracious can buy school uniforms, shoes and other educational resources required to attend school in Zimbabwe, run by Kadama Baptist Orphan Program.
Thank you everyone for supporting our Term 3 Student Council Free Dress Day.
Remember even though we are allowed to wear free dress we still need to make responsible choices to ensure we are safe and sun smart, so no singlets and closed in shoes must be worn.

TALARA ART GALLERY PHOTOGRAPHIC SECTION (TAG) 2025
Our annual Talara Art Gallery (TAG) will be happening once again in Term 4 Week 5, Wednesday 5 November. We are once again adding a Photography Section to the Art Gallery where student’s photographic skills can shine, capturing the moment through their photographs.
A note inviting students to self-nominate and submit photographs is attached to this week’s newsletter.
Students will be asked to submit (coloured or black and white) photocopies of their photographs NOT the actual photo they would like to have displayed at the gallery.
Students may submit up to a total of two entries only.
This is outlined in more detail in the invitation/ permission note (attached to newsletter).
Please ensure that students do not bring in their original photographs during the submission process, they are to submit photocopies only.
A portfolio profile is also to be completed. This along with the permission note is to be stapled to the photocopies of their photos.
The submissions will then be judged, and students will be notified in writing if their submission has been successful on Monday 27 October.
Submission due date Friday 24 October (Week 3).
Students are asked to pass to Mrs Lawrence 5M teacher or Talara office.

YEAR 3-6 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Our annual Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 9 December at Kawana Aquatic Centre. A schedule of events will be provided closer to the carnival date in Term 4.
The Talara Swimming Carnival consists of two components. Firstly, our 50m Championship Events across Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke & Butterfly. In addition to our Championship Events, novelty team relay races are also held to maximise participation, allowing all students, irrelevant of ability, to get involved and have fun in the water across the day.
In the lead up to the carnival, students will be busy attending their Instructional Swimming lessons at Kawana Aquatic Centre (Year 3-4), and Little Mountain Aquatic Centre (Year 5-6). At the discretion of our accredited swim coaches, students who demonstrate the correct skill and technique required across any of the four strokes, will be timed in a 50m swim during lessons. The top 8 fastest times will compete at TPC Swimming Carnival against those of the same gender/age group on the carnival day (e.g. Female, born 2016).
Students born in 2016, 2015 & 2014 who place top 6 & achieve the district qualifying time, will be invited to compete in the Coastal District Swimming Carnival held early Term 1, 2026.

Qld Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
Students in Year 4 to 6 undertook the Qld Engagement and Wellbeing Survey during Term Two.
Over the coming newsletters, we will provide results and feedback from TPC’s data sets.
This first snippet is of sleep and screen time prior to bed.
The questions asked of the students:
- What time do you usually go to bed on school days?
- How often do you use an electronic device before sleep?

There is an abundance of research circulating around regarding the clear link between children under the age of 12 requiring greater than 9.5 hours of sleep nightly.
Below is an article that may assist families with creating regular sleeping patterns.
Queensland Health have also created a website to support parents and families in regards to ‘Healthy Sleep’.
Sleep is essential for growth, immunity, learning and memory and is important for helping a child heal and recover. Healthy sleep means a good quantity and quality of sleep, with regular sleep routines.
What happens if my child doesn’t get enough sleep?
A child who does not get enough healthy sleep may experience difficulties with concentration, memory, regulating their emotions, organising tasks and creative thinking. These children may be easily distracted, irritable, disruptive or generally hyperactive and restless. A lack of healthy sleep has been linked to mental health problems, poor growth, excessive weight gain, and reduced school performance.
How much sleep does a child need?
Age | Recommended sleep hours per 24-hour period |
Infants: 4 to 12 months | 12 to 16 hours (including naps) |
Toddlers: 1 to 2 years | 11 to 14 hours (including naps) |
Pre-schoolers: 3 to 5 years | 10 to 13 hours (including naps) |
Grade-schoolers: 6 to 12 years | 9 to 11 hours |
Teens: 13 to 18 years | 8 to 10 hours |

MLTAQ Speech Contest at the Sunshine Coast University
I am very proud to share that five of our fabulous students, Anatole (Year 3), Ayuna (Year 6), Emmy (Year 4), Mikina (Year 3) and Phoenix (Year 3), participated in the MLTAQ Speech Contest at the Sunshine Coast University on Sunday 31 August.
Throughout Term 3, these wonderful speakers planned, wrote and rehearsed their speeches tirelessly. They prepared themselves for questions that could be asked, refined their pronunciation and mastered their presentations until they were more than ready to present to the judges. I was so impressed to watch them overcome their nervousness on the day as well as their ability to reflect on the experience with a growth mindset afterwards. I could see how proud they were of themselves, and it was a joy to watch them blossom.
Although the judging criteria consists of pronunciation, fluency, accuracy and question answering, this contest offers students far more. They get to share additional languages of their family, improve their self-confidence and public speaking skills, enhance their critical thinking and communication, and it provides fantastic networking opportunities.
Talara was represented with pride and our student’s performed strong. In the French Junior Open Division Phoenix placed first and Anatole second, and in Italian Mikina received first place and Ayuna received the Highly Commended Award.
Super impressed! Congratulations!

Year 5 Students Experience Science Week at High School
As part of Science Week celebrations, our Talara Year 5 cohort students had the exciting opportunity to visit Meridan High School and take part in a real science lesson in a fully equipped chemistry lab. The students were buzzing with excitement as they donned safety goggles, explored the laboratory space, and worked like real scientists.
Guided by Mrs Brown, the High School science teacher, students were able to conduct hands-on experiments that brought chemistry to life. From mixing colourful solutions to watching fascinating chemical reactions, the lab activities gave them a wonderful chance to discover how science connects to the world around them.
The students felt very special to be invited into such an amazing space and appreciated the time, energy, and passion Mrs Brown shared with them. On behalf of the Year 5 cohort students and teachers, we say a very big thank you to Mrs Brown for making the session engaging, fun, and inspiring and to Meridan High School’s Executive Principal Mr Tony Roberts, for transporting us to and from Meridan via use of the high school’s bus.
We are already looking forward to more opportunities to continue our science learning alongside Meridan High School specialist science teachers. Experiences like this help to spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage our Talara students to see themselves as scientists of the future.

Secondary School Catchment Information
The Caloundra Coalition of Secondary Schools, wish you and your student a successful, productive and memorable final year of state primary education.
During this year, coalition primary schools will work together with the four local state secondary sites – Baringa State Secondary College, Caloundra State High School, Kawana Waters State College and Meridan State College, to provide a comprehensive and supportive program to assist both you and your student to make the transition to junior secondary schooling. We would like to provide you with important information regarding coalition enrolment processes for students transitioning to high school:
- Similar to primary school, all four coalition secondary sites have an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP) and corresponding catchment boundary.
- Parents can determine in which catchment they live by using the EdMap website (http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/ ). This is the method used by all coalition secondary schools to determine if a student is living ‘in-catchment’.
- Students are guaranteed enrolment at the school that is indicated by this website as their ‘in-catchment’ school. This is determined by the student’s residential address. Proof of residency is required when lodging an enrolment application with a coalition secondary school and catchment status will be verified upon enrolment.
- The ‘in-catchment’ secondary school is the site that the student is assumed to be attending for Year 6 Transition Days in June and December.
- If a student has an older sibling already attending at an ‘out-of-catchment’ secondary school, the Enrolment Management Plan allows for the student to enrol at that school as long as certain conditions are met.
- Students may enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school if they are successful in gaining a place in a scholarship program or Program of Excellence at that school.
- Parents may lodge a written Expression of Interest to enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school for consideration by the Principal. ‘Out-of-catchment’ enrolments are granted at the sole discretion of the Principal and are subject to available enrolment capacity at the school after all ‘in-catchment’ enrolments have been accommodated.
- Details of each secondary school’s Enrolment Management Plan can be found on the school’s website.
- Each school has an Enrolment Officer who can be contacted to provide further information and advice.
State schools are great schools! Our secondary schools have planned a wide variety of whole day, before school and after school events that showcase the new and exciting opportunities available to Year 7 students. We urge you to take advantage and participate as much as possible in the Year 6 Transition Program this year. A summary of key dates is included on the back of the attached letter for your reference. Further details for each event will be provided closer to the day.

Parent TV

Is your child is struggling at the thoughts of going to school camp? In this video Maggie Dent shares her advice for parents who may be struggling with a child who doesn’t want to go to school camp.
Spending time during the school holidays is the perfect opportunity to better prepare your child for their upcoming camp. Year 4 camp at Currimundi Recreational Centre is local so driving past this site is certainly possible. Please don’t ‘smuggle’ in any lollies or technology for comfort. 😊 A small cuddle toy or something similar is more than suitable.
I have included the link below to watch the quick 5-minute video.
For your convenience, I have also included the access flyer to Parent TV in case you have misplaced it or haven’t accessed the Term 1 Newsletters.
I hope you all have an enjoyable break and we’ll be chatting again next term.

Born Wired: The Hard-To-Have Conversations
Talking with your child about tricky personal subjects. Perhaps your child has been bullied online, sent or received an intimate image, or come across pornography online. Conversations about experiences like these can be difficult.
When you talk to your child about personal subjects, you are trying to balance a number of different things:
- respecting your child’s privacy while still making sure they are safe and happy
- giving them space to test their own problem-solving skills online but supporting them as they make their own way
- educating them about people’s different personalities but knowing you can’t make their choices for them
- establishing boundaries while being understanding and open
How to start the chat
General tips about how to start the chat, whatever the subject.
Plan
Work out what you want to say and how you want to say it, depending on the issue you want to talk about. Go somewhere together where you can talk privately, like in a car driving somewhere. Being in an environment where you can talk without being interrupted can also make things more comfortable for both parent and child.
Perhaps have the talk while you're doing something together, like a long walk or a car trip – especially if you think it will be hard to keep your child engaged in the conversation.
Listen, don't judge
Let your child know you are there to help them, no matter what. Listening will also help you understand their attitudes and respond to specific issues. For example:
- ‘I understand what you're saying, and I'm glad you came to me about this. You're not going to get into trouble, but we need to trust each other, fix this and move forward.’
- ‘You might not want to tell me all the details, but if we can talk honestly about what's happened I promise I will listen and stay calm. No matter what happens, we can do this and I love you.’
Ask questions
Asking questions about how they feel and what they know helps you to gauge your child's level of knowledge and keeps you from lecturing.
For example, you could ask:
- ‘Have you seen anyone being bullied online? How did you think that made them feel? How did you feel? Has anything like this ever happened to you?’
- ‘Is cyberbullying a problem at your school?’
- ‘Do kids at your school talk about watching online porn?’
- ‘Have you ever felt uncomfortable about someone contacting you online?’

Remember, all student absences need to be accounted for and any unexplained absences require the school to ring home to check. Accounting for student absences is a legal requirement for all schools. Your assistance in providing the relevant information to us regarding your child’s absences daily is appreciated.
