Communication with Health Practitioners and Recording a Student’s Medical Information
At Talara, we are committed to supporting the learning, wellbeing, and engagement of every student. To do this effectively, we often work in partnership with a range of health professionals. Building strong, respectful relationships between families, schools, and external professionals is essential to ensuring the best outcomes for students. We understand that navigating this space can be complex for families, so we aim to make the process as clear and supportive as possible.
Below is a summary of key points from the Department of Education’s policies regarding the sharing of information with health professionals and the recording of student medical information:
Consent to Share Information (CTSI):
Before any communication with external health professionals can occur (e.g., sharing documents, participating in meetings, or responding to requests), a signed CTSI form is required. This form ensures your permission is in place for information to be shared and received. It is valid for 12 months and outlines exactly what information will be exchanged.
Communication Channels:
Any requested information is shared directly with the nominated health professional via phone or email, in accordance with privacy guidelines.
Assessment Requests:
Department staff are not authorised to complete online assessments. If an external agency requires information, please ensure the request is in a paper or PDF format, so that the school can retain a copy for our records.
Timeframes:
To ensure we can gather the necessary information and respond appropriately, please allow up to two weeks from when the signed CTSI is received by the school.
Medical Information and Documentation:
If your child has a medical condition noted on their enrolment form, supporting documentation from a qualified health professional is required. A confirmed diagnosis must be provided before the condition can be officially recorded in OneSchool.
We know that the health and wellbeing of your child is a priority, and we are here to support you throughout this process. If you have any questions or would like help completing forms or understanding requirements, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We are more than happy to assist.
Together, through open communication and shared understanding, we can build a strong partnership between home and school that supports the wellbeing, development, and success of every student.
Regional Director’s Visit
On Friday 1 August, Lyal Giles (Department of Education North Coast Region, Regional Director) hosted a professional learning day at Talara Primary College with School Supervisors, Senior Education Officers and approximately 20 Principals.
It was a privilege to have our visitors welcomed into Prep A, Prep B, Year 1B, Year 1Y, Year 2B and Year 2M to conduct Learning walks and talks, and view student learning. Each class had four very confident student reps, who all did a wonderful job explaining their current learning focus in English, their Learning Goals and the pertinent aspects of the learning elements required to be demonstrated to achieve an A, B or C level of achievement with the assessment task. Our visitors were particularly impressed with the output and quality of student writing across all rooms. Thank you to our teachers who opened their rooms to support this regional learning project. Well done Team Talara.

Have you got your costume organised yet??
Remember Book Week celebrations will be held in Week 6, with this year’s costume parades taking place on Thursday 21 August (parents/carers welcome). We are excited to see all the creative costumes inspired by favourite book characters or this year’s theme – “Book An Adventure”. Students can shine on their own or get together with some friends to do a group theme. Costumes need to be sun safe and include appropriate footwear, but don’t have to be complicated - just get creative with what you have at home in your dress up box or cupboard. An awesome $15 book voucher per class, kindly donated by Helping Hands, will be up for grabs for the most imaginative costume!
We are loving all the photos of students reading in unique and unusual locations that we have received for our Adventure Reading Photo Competition so far. If you haven’t entered yet, get reading and either email photos to your classroom teacher or Mrs Millberry at tmill372@eq.edu.au, or print and bring them to the library by the end of week 5. Talara Environmentally Aware Kids (TEAK)
Recently we celebrated a belated National Tree Day, by planting over fifty native seedlings around the senior amenities block. Massive thanks to our school officers Pete and Shane, who prepared the ground and plants for us so that we could get straight into planting during the lunch break.
Big thanks also to iLandscape in Caloundra who provided a wonderful variety of healthy, native plants for the project. They really looked after us and gave us a great price which enabled us to purchase even more plants to enhance this space. We are looking forward to watching these plants grow and provide more shade as well as habitats for our local, native wildlife.
Our TEAK group continues to meet at first break on Fridays.

A short note to say farewell, and thank you for the opportunity to be Talara’s Chaplain over the past 2.5 years. It is a sad farewell, as I’ve loved getting to know so many people (little and big!) in our community.
My goal has been to be a safe space for people to share their hurts and their hopes. To make little and big faces smile. For people to feel heard, valued and loved. To return hope where it had been lost. The challenges facing many of our young people extend far greater than friendship issues and ‘spilt milk’. Many of the children I speak with are managing issues I didn’t even know about when I was their age.
I am off to a contract Training role with CREP-SC, training volunteers to be Christian Religious Instruction teachers.
We may forget what people say, but we do remember how they made us feel. May we all be the adults that children feel safe with.
May God bless all your days ahead, Peta

Talara Taipans Esports Team
The Talara Taipans had a jam-packed July filled with training, digital safety learning, and some serious Esports competitions!
On 24 July, Harper, Jess, Kiara, Kayden, Lewis, Rocco, Murray and Sylvie took to the stage at the FUSE Cup ‘Just Dance’ competition held at Matthew Flinders Anglican College. As a team, they proudly placed 2nd in the Sunshine Coast region, narrowly missing out on first place.
In the individual heats, Harper danced her way into 1st place with the highest combined score of the day, while Jess followed closely as runner-up. Harper will now join Angus (our Mario Kart winner) at the FUSE Cup State Finals on the Gold Coast in November.
The team's success didn’t stop there! On 30 July, at the Queensland Esports Sunshine Coast Open held at Meridan State College, Arley, Martin, Alex and Cruz competed in the Rocket League (PC) competition, reaching the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Alex, Cruz, Kayden, Harper, Sylvie, Kiara, Marshall, Zane, Ace, and Lewis also competed in the Minecraft Education ‘Capture the Flag’ tournament. Their strong defensive strategies and outstanding sportsmanship saw both Talara teams reach the Grand Final, where they had to battle each other! The teams were neck and neck until, in the very last second, Marshall captured the final flag to secure victory for Team 1. Talara was crowned Sunshine Coast Division Champions and awarded the tournament trophy.
Once again, the entire team showed dedication, resilience and outstanding behaviour both on and off the virtual field.
Congratulations to all players on an incredible season so far. Next up: the FUSE Cup ‘Rocket League’ (Xbox) competition in October. Go Taipans!

Proud of our Oztaggers
From 25–27 July, Talara proudly fielded two teams at the All Schools Oztag Tournament held at Sunshine Coast Stadium — a huge carnival featuring over 375 teams from more than 110 schools across Queensland.
Our Year 6 Girls were undefeated in the rounds and quarter finals, showcasing exceptional teamwork and determination. In a tough semi final clash against Buddina, the game was locked at 2-all at halftime. Despite a strong effort, the girls went down 5 - 2 to a talented side with a strong kicking game. An outstanding achievement and a wonderful experience — we are incredibly proud of this team and all they accomplished. Well done, girls!
The Year 6 Boys faced some tough competition on Day 1, but rebounded superbly on Day 2, winning all three games and got the chance to play a featured ‘TV game’ on the main stadium field. Although they finished 4th in their pool and narrowly missed the finals, the boys represented Talara with heart and resilience throughout the tournament.
Both Mr Bathersby and Mrs Noy are immensely proud of all the players. Our students displayed what it truly means to be part of the Talara community - showing respect, playing with pride, accepting officials’ decisions, and consistently demonstrating great sportsmanship.
A heartfelt thank you to our families for their ongoing commitment — from early and late training sessions to cheering from the sidelines. We appreciate the efforts of all the parents, grandparents and siblings who made the weekend such a memorable and exciting experience.
Finally, a big congratulations to Ivy-Rose K, Ayuna B and Mia O for their selection in the Queensland All Schools All Star Merit team. Very well deserved girls!

Year 1 Olden Days Incursion
This term, the Year 1 curriculum focuses on developing students’ understanding of the recent past of families. In week 3, Year 1 students were given opportunities to dress up and explore the differences in family structures and roles over recent time. They considered how aspects of family life such as education and play have undergone continuities and changes. The students had a fantastic time learning how families in the past completed household chores, churned their own butter, learnt calligraphy with a quill and ink pot, played elastics and marbles and studied Indigenous song and dance over time. Such exploration provided context for current events and helped the students understand how the past has shaped our present.

Year 5 Maranatha Recreation Camp (15-17 October)
From Wednesday 15 October to Friday 17 October, our Year 5 classes will be going to camp at Maranatha Recreational and Educational Centre. The camp is located at Yandina and the site is surrounded by rainforest, bordered by Wappa Creek. Students will travel to and from the site by bus and be accommodated in dorms on site.
It is an expectation that every student attends camp as it is an integral part of our school curriculum. School based learning experiences will take place prior to, and after camp. The camp program will focus on various skills including goal setting, leadership skills, teamwork, cooperation, acceptance and tolerance of others in new surroundings.
We ask that permission forms and medical forms be returned as soon as possible (no later than 1 September) and payment is made before Wednesday 10 September. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please contact myself to discuss options to support you during this time.
Secondary School Catchment Information
The Caloundra Coalition of Secondary Schools, wish you and your student a successful, productive and memorable final year of state primary education.
During this year, coalition primary schools will work together with the four local state secondary sites – Baringa State Secondary College, Caloundra State High School, Kawana Waters State College and Meridan State College, to provide a comprehensive and supportive program to assist both you and your student to make a positive transition to junior secondary schooling. At this early time of the year, we would like to provide you with important information regarding coalition enrolment processes for students transitioning to high school:
- Similar to primary school, all four coalition secondary sites have an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP) and corresponding catchment boundary.
- Parents can determine in which catchment they live by using the EdMap website (http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/). This is the method used by all coalition secondary schools to determine if a student is living ‘in-catchment’.
- Students are guaranteed enrolment at the school that is indicated by this website as their ‘in-catchment’ school. This is determined by the student’s residential address. Proof of residency is required when lodging an enrolment application with a coalition secondary school and catchment status will be verified upon enrolment.
- The ‘in-catchment’ secondary school is the site that the student is assumed to be attending for Year 6 Transition Days in June and December.
- If a student has an older sibling already attending at an ‘out-of-catchment’ secondary school, the Enrolment Management Plan allows for the student to enrol at that school as long as certain conditions are met.
- Students may enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school if they are successful in gaining a place in a scholarship program or Program of Excellence at that school.
- Parents may lodge a written Expression of Interest to enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school for consideration by the Principal. ‘Out-of-catchment’ enrolments are granted at the sole discretion of the Principal and are subject to available enrolment capacity at the school after all ‘in-catchment’ enrolments have been accommodated.
- Details of each secondary school’s Enrolment Management Plan can be found on the school’s website.
- Each school has an Enrolment Officer who can be contacted to provide further information and advice.
State schools are great schools! Our secondary schools have planned a wide variety of whole day, before school and after school events that showcase the new and exciting opportunities available to Year 7 students. We urge you to take advantage and participate as much as possible in the Year 6 Transition Program this year. A summary of key dates is included on the back of the attached letter for your reference. Further details for each event will be provided closer to the day.

Born Wired: Cyberbullying
A guide to online bullying for parents and carers.
Cyberbullying of children is when someone uses online content or communication to seriously humiliate, seriously harass, seriously intimidate, or seriously threaten a child or young person under the age of 18.
It can take many forms including sending abusive messages, hurtful images or videos, nasty online gossip, excluding or humiliating others, or creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate them.
Online bullying can have a devastating impact on young people, whose online life is a key part of their identity and how they interact socially.
I think my child is being bullied
Your child may not tell you if they are experiencing bullying behaviour online because of a fear it might make things worse for them or they may lose access to their devices and the internet.
Signs to watch for
- being upset after using the internet or their mobile phone
- changes in personality, such as becoming more withdrawn
- anxious, sad or angry
- appearing lonely or distressed
- unexpected changes in friendship groups
- a decline in their school work
- changes in their sleep patterns
- avoidance of school or clubs
- a decline in their physical health
- becoming secretive about their online activities and
- mobile phone use
What to do if your child is being cyberbullied
7 ways to support your child if they're being bullied online
- Reassure them that you’re here to support them and that you won’t take away their device
- Listen without judging when they open up
- Collect evidence of the bullying, like screen shots and URLs
- Help them to report it to the platform or social media site
- No response? Report it to eSafety.gov.au
- Update their privacy settings across devices and accounts

Parent/Carer involvement in education
On average, a child spends about 25-30% of their waking hours at school during a typical school day. Therefore, it is incredibly important for parents/carers to be actively involved in their child's education. Parental support and engagement significantly influence a child’s academic success and overall development. When parents/carers participate in school activities, communicate regularly with teachers, and show interest in their child’s learning, children feel more motivated and confident. This involvement helps create a strong foundation for good study habits, positive attitudes towards school, and better social skills. Moreover, parents/carers can better understand their child’s strengths and challenges, allowing them to provide timely encouragement and assistance. Ultimately, a close partnership between parents/carers and educators fosters a supportive learning environment where children can thrive both academically and personally.
At Talara Primary College, our staff are committed to fostering open and honest communication about every aspect of your child’s education. When reaching out via email, we kindly ask for a 48-hour period to respond to non-urgent inquiries. If you would prefer to speak with your child’s class teacher by phone, please contact the Admin office first, and they will take a message on your behalf. The teacher will return your call as soon as they are able. Please keep in mind that teachers have daily playground duties, which may affect the timing of their response. We truly appreciate your understanding and look forward to continuing our partnership in supporting your child’s learning journey.
