NAPLAN Results
Talara continues to uphold its Excellence in Education mantra, as reflected in our very positive NAPLAN results across the college. Our school’s participation rates were 5% above the state average, meaning the results achieved are highly valid and representative.
Across the ten subtests (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, and Numeracy – for both Year 3 and Year 5), Talara Primary College performed at or above both Regional and State benchmarks. In six of these subtests, our students achieved results at least 20 points higher than the Regional and State averages.
Notably, Talara students excelled in seven of the ten subtests, with achievement levels also significantly exceeding the National averages. Our strongest performances were in Reading and Grammar and Punctuation, with scores well above Regional, State, and National levels. The Year 5 Spelling subtest has been identified as a key area for improvement.
Well done to all Talara students, staff, and our broader community for rising to the challenge of academic rigour and prioritising high-level literacy and numeracy skills!
New Bike Racks
A big thank you to our dedicated Business Manager, Kirsty Gould, and our P&C for organising the installation of the new bike racks near the Jacana Street entry. It’s been great to see students demonstrating excellent safety habits—walking their bikes and scooters on and off campus and wearing secured helmets.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Life at Talara is certainly busy, offering students a rich variety of extra-curricular experiences. In just a two-week span, our staff and P&C have supported:
- The Prep Sea Life Excursion
- Extension and Enrichment Program (EEP) Day
- Year 5 Science Week activities at Meridan State College
- Year 5/6 Interschool Sports
- Year 1 Australia Zoo Excursion
- STEM Challenge at Caloundra State High School
- ICAS Academic Testing
- And, of course, BOOK WEEK!!!
A huge thank you to our amazing Talara staff for the behind-the-scenes work—organising paperwork, coordinating logistics, and ensuring every event is engaging and safe.
🎭 Reminder: Have you got your ticket to the school musical, MADAGASCAR?
Before and After School Use of School Facilities
Talara Primary College has established before and after school procedures designed to ensure a calm start to the day and the safety of all students, staff, and community members. Recently, there has been interest in clarifying access to school facilities outside of regular hours.
Following discussions at the July P&C meeting and the August School Council meeting, we are seeking your feedback on this matter.
Talara is committed to:
- Maintaining our Before School expectation that students arrive after 8:15am and remain seated in their designated court area, reading or chatting with friends.
- Ensuring all school facilities are available for Helping Hands Out of School Hours Care exclusively from 3:15pm.
- Restricting ball games in central areas after school due to safety concerns, given the volume of over 1,000 people exiting the school at that time.
We invite you to share your thoughts via this short community survey.
📝 Survey closes: Tuesday 26 August at 9:00am

P&C News
As we near the end of Week 6, there’s a real sense of excitement building for everything still to come in Term 3. The hard work and dedication of our teaching team in preparing for the Musical has been nothing short of remarkable. The additional time, energy, and care they are investing to create a truly magical and memorable experience for our students is deeply appreciated.
A special thank you also goes to our parents – for keeping students motivated, managing early mornings, and juggling extra drop-offs. We know that once Madagascar comes to life on stage, every moment of effort will have been worth it!
Colour Explosion Fun Run
The countdown is officially on, and the buzz is growing louder every day! On Wednesday 17 September, our school will burst into a rainbow of colour, laughter, and pure joy as students take on the Colour Explosion Fun Run course. It’s a day guaranteed to leave huge smiles on the faces of the students.
This year, the P&C has set an ambitious goal of $60,000 and we’ve lined up plenty of amazing incentives to keep everyone motivated along the way!
- First 3 classes with 18 students registered online win… Zooper Doopers for the whole class!
- Top 10 fundraisers each week go into a draw for a $10 Tuckershack voucher, drawn every Friday, and announced via Facebook, with the voucher available Monday.
- Top Class Fundraiser: You’ll have the honour of dressing up your Deputy… and if last year’s outfits were anything to go by, it’s sure to be wild, wacky, and totally unforgettable!
Our “Dress the Deputy” representatives are:
🌈 Prep – Year 2: Mr Hardy
🌈 Years 3 – 4: Mr Bathersby
🌈 Years 5 – 6: Ms Walton
- Highest individual fundraiser gets to dress the Principal and choose the 2026 Term 1 Disco theme.
- Raise $250+ and you’ll go into the draw to SLIME the Principal. (Yes, slime. Glorious, gooey slime.)
- For every $100 raised, you’ll get a ticket into the draw to win a kids bike from 99 Bikes, thanks to the generous team at MJB Fabrication!
Still need a little motivation? Check out last year’s epic video; Watch here
And parents – we’ve got something for you too! Any parent who volunteers on the day will get the chance to run the course during the lunch break. It’s our way of saying thank you (and letting you join in on the colourful chaos – the kids can’t have all the fun!).
Mark your calendars, have a bake sale at work to help your students raise funds, and get ready to make this the most colourful, laughter-filled, and successful fundraiser yet!

Father’s Day Stall
Our Father’s Day Stall will run from Tuesday 2 September to Thursday 4 September. Vouchers can be purchased via QKR!, and cash or EFT will also be accepted on the day.
A heartfelt thank you to Kerry for her incredible work behind the scenes, and to our wonderful volunteers who generously give their time to run the stall – we truly couldn’t do it without you.

P&C Meeting
Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 2 September, 6:30pm in the Admin building. P&C meetings are a great opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, connect with others, and gain valuable insight into what makes Talara such a special place. Years 4 -6 Cyber Safety Presentation
CYBERKINDNESS’: presented by ‘The Playground Craze

The Playground Craze uses cool pop music and fun theatre to engage students with important social-emotional skills and values.
The live in-school performance will cover topics such as confidence, resilience, kindness, persistence, friendship and cooperation with actionable steps that the students can take to improve their own wellbeing. In a pop-concert-like atmosphere, the band uses street dance, pop music and comedy to build rapport with children. Students learn through storytelling how to build positive attributes in themselves by observing the characters in ‘real world’ contexts of young people.

The presentation complements Talara Primary College’s existing cyber safety, anti-bullying and student wellbeing programs. This will take place next week on Wednesday 27 August in our hall. Consent was sent through QParents last month for all students in Years 4-6 at a cost of $9 per student.
We encourage all parents/carers to provide consent and make payment if you haven’t already done so. Children need guidance and assistance to navigate the digital world, and this presentation will provide much needed support.
The senior school are very much looking forward to this.

Secondary School Catchment Information
The Caloundra Coalition of Secondary Schools, wish you and your student a successful, productive and memorable final year of state primary education.
During this year, coalition primary schools will work together with the four local state secondary sites – Baringa State Secondary College, Caloundra State High School, Kawana Waters State College and Meridan State College, to provide a comprehensive and supportive program to assist both you and your student to make the transition to junior secondary schooling. We would like to provide you with important information regarding coalition enrolment processes for students transitioning to high school:
- Similar to primary school, all four coalition secondary sites have an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP) and corresponding catchment boundary.
- Parents can determine in which catchment they live by using the EdMap website (http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/ ). This is the method used by all coalition secondary schools to determine if a student is living ‘in-catchment’.
- Students are guaranteed enrolment at the school that is indicated by this website as their ‘in-catchment’ school. This is determined by the student’s residential address. Proof of residency is required when lodging an enrolment application with a coalition secondary school and catchment status will be verified upon enrolment.
- The ‘in-catchment’ secondary school is the site that the student is assumed to be attending for Year 6 Transition Days in June and December.
- If a student has an older sibling already attending at an ‘out-of-catchment’ secondary school, the Enrolment Management Plan allows for the student to enrol at that school as long as certain conditions are met.
- Students may enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school if they are successful in gaining a place in a scholarship program or Program of Excellence at that school.
- Parents may lodge a written Expression of Interest to enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school for consideration by the Principal. ‘Out-of-catchment’ enrolments are granted at the sole discretion of the Principal and are subject to available enrolment capacity at the school after all ‘in-catchment’ enrolments have been accommodated.
- Details of each secondary school’s Enrolment Management Plan can be found on the school’s website.
- Each school has an Enrolment Officer who can be contacted to provide further information and advice.
State schools are great schools! Our secondary schools have planned a wide variety of whole day, before school and after school events that showcase the new and exciting opportunities available to Year 7 students. We urge you to take advantage and participate as much as possible in the Year 6 Transition Program this year. A summary of key dates is included on the back of the attached letter for your reference. Further details for each event will be provided closer to the day.

Rugby League Mark West Cup
Throughout Term 2 and 3, the TPC Rugby League squad has competed in two different competitions. Allowing our students the opportunity to display their skill and talents against other schools in the Coastal District Region.
The first competition being the hotly contested Steve Belsham Shield (Mark West Cup) which was held at the end of Term 2, at the Maroochydore Junior Rugby League fields. A mixture of Year 5 and 6 students attended the day and represented Talara in a fantastic manner. This year was the first time for several years that the TPC side was represented by both males and females.
The side faced a strong Kawana team in the first game of the morning with Kawana scoring a late try, coming away with a 3 all draw. Unfortunately, Talara conceding the first try meant we would however lose our first match.
Spirits were high heading into rounds 2 and 3 where the team rallied scoring convincing victories over both Mooloolaba SS and Unity College, allowing for a semi finals appearance against the old enemy Buddina.
Tensions were high as the game commenced with Talara scoring an early try through Beau C to give the team the early upper hand. Both sides traded tries throughout the contest with Buddina scoring a late last try to snatch victory 4 – 3 in an entertaining match. Buddina would go on to convincingly win the final and progress through to the Mark West Cup in Redcliffe.
Mountain Creek Rugby League
An all Year 6 Talara squad travelled to Mountain Creek High School to defend our title at the Mountain Creek Rugby League Excellence Trial Day. The Rugby League coaches at Mountain Creek use this day as a method of overseeing potential students for their Year 7 Rugby League Excellence program.
After the narrow defeat to Buddina at Maroochydore, the Talara squad where chomping at the bit to redeem themselves against Buddina SS. First up were the highly fancied Pacific Paradise SS. With the wind at the students backs and ferocious defence, Talara came away with an astounding 3 nil victory. This initial win paved the way for some outstanding performances, successfully overcoming Brightwater 3 nil and Mooloolaba 4 nil. A surprise appearance from Mr Adams, with his relentless positivity and gusto, certainly spurred on each student to give their all heading into the finals.
The semi-final against Kawana was a defence driven game with Noah G coming away with the defensive play of the day against his much larger opponent, dislodging the ball in a tackle that was felt around the entire school. This paved the way for Angus C in the following set, to stride away dodging defenders and a family of kangaroos, who had entered the field of play, to score the only try for the game in a nail biting 1 nil win for Talara.
Buddina SS awaited the Talara team in the final in a clash that everyone had been eyeing all afternoon. With no team having scored against Talara all carnival the team was confident that they could defend the Mountain Creek Rugby League title. With both teams exchanging sets of astounding attack and defence, it was Buddina who crossed first with a wonderful team effort. Buddina would then go on to run away 3 nil winners in an outstanding display of Rugby League from both sides.
Award Winners for the day were chosen by the Mountain Creek staff after each game:
Pacific Paradise SS – Ryder R
Brightwater SS – Angus C
Mooloolaba SS – Lennox K
Players player – Ryder R
Player of the Carnival/Final – Angus C
A huge thankyou to all the parents who gave up their valuable time for both carnivals to cheer, encourage and provide support to the entire team. Talara and the students are grateful for all the support that is given towards Rugby League.

QAFL Streetsmarts Competition
Year 5/6 Boys & Girls - Wednesday 13 August – Kawana Park
The Year 5/6 boys and girls teams proudly represented Talara Primary College at the QAFL Streetsmarts Competition held at Kawana Park on Wednesday 13th August.
Since Term 2, both squads had been training with enthusiasm and dedication, regularly attending early morning sessions. Many students were completely new to AFL, but quickly developed a strong interest in trying out the sport. Over time, players displayed great improvement in their fundamental skills, game awareness, and understanding of AFL.
Boys Competition
The boys team started the day in fine form, securing victories in their first three matches against Unity College, Buddina 2, and Brightwater SS. They then faced two tough contests against Buddina 1 and Matthew Flinders, narrowly going down in both after hard-fought battles. Showing resilience and determination, the boys finished their carnival strongly with a win against Kawana.
Throughout the day, the boys’ performance was outstanding. They attacked the footy with courage in contested situations, worked hard defensively, and moved the ball with teamwork. Their sportsmanship was exemplary, and every player contributed to the team’s overall success.
A huge thank you goes to all students who committed to the program from start to finish. Your dedication to improving your skills, supporting your teammates, and representing our school with pride is to be commended. We would also like to sincerely thank the parents for encouraging their children’s involvement, providing transport, and being there on the sidelines to cheer them on. Your support was invaluable in making this program such a success.
Well done to all involved – we look forward to building on this year’s success in future AFL events!
Girls Competition
Queensland AFL Gala Day – Dancing, Tackling, and Everything in Between
What a fantastic day we had at the Queensland AFL Gala Day! The girls were set the challenge of playing six whole games. At times, it felt like the football was simply an interruption to ongoing dance rehearsals during break times.
Considering that AFL was a brand-new sport for most of the team, it was brilliant to see so much effort, teamwork, and sportsmanship from start to finish. The highlight for me was the rapid improvement across the day, with tackling being the most noticeable area of growth.
With no scores being kept, we had the perfect excuse to rotate the girls through every position on the field. It was great to see them give everything a go.
A huge thank you goes to all the students who committed to the day from the first bounce to the final siren. Your willingness to try new positions, improve your skills, and support each other on (and off) the field is to be commended. We would also like to sincerely thank the parents for encouraging their children’s involvement, providing transport, and being there on the sidelines to cheer them on. Your support made the day even more special.
Well done, girls, and thanks for such a great day. Hopefully, the experience has planted the seed for a lifelong love of our national game.

Bullying No Way!
Last week, Talara proudly participated in Australia’s Bullying No Way! Week, a nationwide initiative that promotes respect, kindness, and inclusion. Across the week, Talara Leaders and Councillors worked tirelessly, facilitating various awareness raising initiatives designed to highlight the importance of standing up against bullying and supporting one another in safe and respectful ways. Daily lunch time activities, strategies and resources were shared, viewed and discussed raising awareness of bullying and the many different forms of bullying i.e., physical, verbal and online cyberbullying. Through daily fun lunch time activities, student leaders shared and discussed Talara’s High Five and Safe Five key strategies raising continual awareness associated with how to say, “No Way”, to Bullying and proactive steps to take action every day.
At Talara, we continue to promote practical strategies that empower our students to respond to challenging situations.
Our High Five strategy encourages students to:
- Ignore
- Walk away
- Talk friendly
- Talk firmly
- Report
Our Safe Five strategy encourages students to:
- Challenge Bullying
- Look Confident
- Play Near Adults
- Play In A Group
- Stay Away
We would like to acknowledge and thank our Student Council Representatives and Student Leaders who showed outstanding initiative and leadership by organising daily lunchtime activities throughout the week. These activities created opportunities for students to come together, raise awareness, and celebrate a safe and supportive school culture.
We are proud of our students’ commitment to building a community where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Born Wired: Are they old enough?
How to navigate key online milestones for your child.
Parents and carers play a key role in guiding their children as they first encounter the online world and begin to learn through exploration, play and social interaction.
When is your child old enough to take their first online steps and begin to explore on their own? How soon are they ready for smartphones and social media accounts?
It is a good idea to protect younger children from online risks such as encountering harmful content, contact with strangers or missing out on physical activity. But it is up to you to decide when and how they take these first steps, and how best to support them as they begin their online journey.
Is your child old enough for a smartphone?
A smartphone is about much more than making phone calls. It allows your child to spend time online using their own device, rather than a shared family tablet or computer. It literally puts the online world in their hands.
The right age for your child will depend on their level of maturity and your family routine. It is worth asking yourself the following questions before handing over a digital device.
- Does my child have a good sense of responsibility?
- Are they able to stick to the rules?
- Do they show a good understanding of actions and consequences?
- Do they come to me or another trusted adult when they are distressed or if they encounter problems?
- What are the rules about when and where my child can use their smartphone?
For younger children it may be best to start with a mobile phone without internet access, and only introduce a smartphone when they demonstrate an appropriate level of maturity. There are a range of mobile devices available that allow you to control which tools or services your child has access to.
Some younger children might argue that they are ready for a smartphone, especially if their friends already have one. But it is worth holding out until you feel confident that your child is mature enough.
If you have a “family online safety contract”, it would be a good idea to go through it carefully with your child in the context of the new responsibilities they are taking on with their own phone.
When are they ready for social media accounts?
Both the physical age of your child and their level of maturity and resilience can affect their ability to have positive experiences on social media.
Each social media site and app has its own criteria for minimum age requirements. Most require users to be at least 13 years of age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13.
Key questions to help determine your child’s readiness for social media:
- Does your child know how to deal with negative online experiences?
- Does your child understand the importance of protecting their personal information?
- Does your child understand how privacy settings for social media work?
- Does your child understand what is safe to share online?
- Does your child know how to report cyberbullying and other kinds of abusive content?
- Is your child willing to let you establish clear rules and supervise their social media activity?

BALANCING CORRECTION AND CONNECTION IN PARENTING
Jason Gibson advises parents to balance correcting and directing with intentional moments of connection—engaging with kids without demands—so they feel understood and valued. Tracking these interactions and adapting to their developmental stage can restore harmony and strengthen relationships.
As parents, it can be really hard to reflect on our own parenting and whether we strike a good balance between correcting, directing and connecting with our kids. In this video, Jason Gibson tells us how to work out what our parenting feels like for our kids right now.

Parent Notes
Hello beautiful souls!
Last term I shared a couple of mornings, each week, with staff, working on all things health, mindset, and practices to benefit our lives. My mini sessions are now open to our beautiful community of parents, friends and anyone wishing to attend.
Each session can vary - I cover anything from breathwork, meditation, how our body heals itself to specific classes for menopause, the quantum field and much much more. Sessions are held here at the school, Talara Primary College.
I also have a 2-hour live session "The Power of You", coming up during the September holidays. This is a session where I don't hold back - in the hope that I can challenge your mind so you feel inspired. It's for anyone who may be feeling stuck, feel a lack of self-worth or just wanting to learn some practical techniques to help reduce stress and live more peacefully.
You can contact me for my information or to secure your spot, for either my Mini Sessions or "The Power of You".
Feel free to follow me on Insta @a_noetic_life or FB A Noetic Life.

Student Absences
Please remember to ring the school on our Student Absence Line (5438 3760) or send an SMS to our SMS Absence Line: (0474 195 135) otherwise a note to the teacher the next day is required.
Remember, all student absences need to be accounted for and any unexplained absences require the school to ring home to check. Accounting for student absences is a legal requirement for all schools. Your assistance in providing the relevant information to us regarding your child’s absences daily is appreciated.
