The Principal
It has been a very positive start to Term 2 and was lovely to see so many excited Talara students reconnecting with their teachers and friends after the Easter vacation period.
I have certainly received lots of warm and friendly welcomes from Talara students and parents. As your new principal, I am thrilled to be starting this journey with all of you. I am committed to leading our school community with a personalised approach. I look forward to making genuine connections and working in partnership with Talara families to achieve each child’s educational goals and potential. I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for the last 27 years. The southern end of the Sunshine Coast is very much my home, and I am proud to be serving in my local community.
I encourage everyone—students, parents, and staff—to work together as a team. Open communication and collaboration are the key to creating a positive and productive school culture. I am confident that, with your support and involvement, we will ensure Talara Primary College continues to grow its outstanding reputation in our local community and is firmly held as the school of choice for your child.
Please feel free to reach out to me (lcutt1@eq.edu.au) if you need any assistance to ensure your child has the most successful experience at Talara Primary College.
Term 2 Curriculum
Students have enthusiastically jumped straight into their Term 2 curriculum learning with their Australian Curriculum units of work. As you work your way through the school newsletter, you will see some helpful articles from our Heads of Department – Curriculum. Firstly, the term overviews provide parents with an outline of the Australian Curriculum units of work that your child will be engaged with this term. In addition, an article related to Systematic Synthetic Phonics (SSP). This is an evidence backed approach to developing student’s literacy skills and in alignment with the Australian Curriculum learning expectationsis, SSP is implemented across all year levels from Prep to Year 6 to support strong literacy skills for all our students.
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day is traditionally a time when the Talara Primary College showcases our community spirt and our recent ANZAC school ceremony and participation in the Caloundra citizens’ march certainly lived up to these traditions. My heartfelt thanks go out to our families who supported both of these events. Congratulations to our school captains for their leadership and confidence in conducting our school ceremony, our choir for their inspirational performances and our team of staff who supported these important commenorations.
Talara Community
The Talara culture ‘Welcomes, Embraces and Includes’ all members of our school community. This is the X Factor of belonging to the Talara community that we are all proud of. As you read through this edition of the school newsletter, you will note the strong focus on sustaining and strengthening our Talara culture via school events, student activities and high expectations for positve and respectful interactions in all facets of our school community. At Talara, this culture is enhanced with our fabulous P&C association. Please support the upcoming P&C organised events such as the Election Day Bake Sale, Mother’s Day Stall, Trivia Night and School Disco. The Talara Primary College P&C committee is a welcoming team. Attendance at a P&C Meeting or helping out at a P&C event is a great way to meet new people, make friends and make a positive difference to our school and your child’s educational opportunities. The P&C directs its fundraising back into the school to resource enhancements which benefit our students. Our next meeting is 6 May at 6.30pm in the Administration building. Hope to see lots of enthusiastic parents joining the team for this meeting.

P & C News
Welcome to term 2 everyone, we hope you had a wonderful holiday break. We look forward to a productive and enjoyable term.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to Lisa Cutter as she joins us as the Acting Principal of Talara. Lisa brings with her a wealth of experience, commitment, and a passion for educational excellence that aligns beautifully with the values and vision of Talara.
With our collective support, we are confident that Lisa will lead Talara with strength and compassion through this new chapter. We look forward to the positive impact of her leadership and to the continued growth of our community under her guidance.
Mega Draw Raffle
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the families who have participated in our first major fundraising initiative for 2025. Your enthusiasm and support in selling and returning raffle books have contributed significantly to the overwhelming success of this event.
Thanks to your incredible efforts, demand for raffle books has far exceeded our expectations—an exciting challenge that reflects the strong sense of community and commitment across TPC. Any student that has sold more than 3 books will go into the draw to win a $150 P&C voucher, and the class with the highest number of books sold will receive a class party.
A reminder, the due date for returning all raffle books—sold or unsold—is Friday, 2 May. This helps ensure every book is accounted for in line with our auditing requirements. We look forward to announcing the winners of the amazing prizes, drawn 16 May.
Once again, thank you for your ongoing support.

Structured Synthetic Phonics 2025
In 2025, we have made some very intentional changes to the way we are approaching the teaching and learning of literacy, and more specifically, Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP).
We will be using an Australian, evidence-based approach to SSP. This approach is called PLD which stands for Promoting Literacy Development. It is aligned with the Science of Reading and extends from the junior primary years through to upper primary years thereby, facilitating a whole school approach.
Effective teaching of SSP requires Explicit teaching that is systematically delivered. Students are taught to sound words out. They learn that letters correspond to letter sounds and that these can be blended to form words and that words can be spelled by sounding out and building a sequence of letters corresponding to the spoken sounds.
Our teachers have been engaged in learning PLD’s approach to ensure consistency across our college. You might have noticed that spelling words and activities in homework books are looking a little bit different or perhaps your child might have brought home a decodable reader. These changes are all aligned to our new PLD approach.
In term 2 we will be offering a parent workshop to elaborate on our SSP approach. We will also be sharing information in the upcoming editions of our school newsletter. The school has appointed a PLD Coach, Mrs Alana Holmes, to support the implementation of this new approach and it features on our Annual Implementation Plan as one of our whole school priorities.
For more information please see the Parent Resources tab of the PD website.

ANZAC Remembrance at Talara Primary College
This year our whole-of-school ANZAC Day parade was held on Thursday 24 April. Our school captains, conducted an outstanding and very moving ceremony. We were honoured to have guest speaker, Captain Erin Yelland, Acting Officer Commanding 101 Signal Squadron, Royal Australian Defence Force, deliver a very special address reinforcing to our students the importance of our CARE values and how they are invaluable in life outside school. When things get tough, the Anzacs stay loyal to their team and country, putting teamwork above all else. And lastly, excellence, which means always trying to be the best we can be each day.
The ANZAC Day writing competition had a fantastic response right across the school. Congratulations to our winners, Thomas M 1G, Hannah B 3Y, Ayuna B 6B who read their very special literacy pieces with enthusiasm and had a major impact on the audience at our ANZAC Service. Also, a special thanks to Stevie A (Year 6) for reciting the poem ‘We remember those on ANZAC Day’.
As always, our students in the choir were all exceptional, creating a very moving atmosphere that embodied the ANZAC spirit.
Many thanks to the families who then supported their children to represent our college at the Citizens march at Caloundra on Friday morning. In all, we had around 250 passionate students along with staff, participate in the march from Stockland Caloundra around to the Caloundra RSL. I am always extremely proud of the students who put on their school uniforms and contribute their own time on a holiday, to acknowledge and remember our past and current service personnel in this manner. You all looked terrific!

ANZAC Day Badges
Our 2025 Talara Councillors/ Leaders did our school and Talara Community proud arriving early each morning to set up and sell various ANZAC DAY badges. This LEGACY fundraiser allowed students a way to demonstrate our respect and appreciation while giving something back to the families of the various men and women who gave their lives to ensure our freedom and the right to live in this beautiful democratic country of Australia.
This year we were successfully able to raise $326.85. All money raised is being kindly donated to LEGACY that supports families of those who served and sacrificed, providing the essential social and financial support that these families need.
Congratulations to all students Councillors and Leaders who assisted Mr Woods in Mrs Lawrences absence. The students and extended Talara Community looked just amazing wearing their ANZAC DAY Badges with pride and respect for our past and present service men, women and animals. Terrific effort Talara.

Prep, Year 1, Year 2 Brisbane Lions Mascot Visit
Our junior school students were lucky enough to have a visit from the Brisbane Lions Mascot in Week 1 this term. Lion was accompanied by a Kawana Park Eagles AusKick representative who tried to explain to the students how to sign up for AusKick this season. However, Lion was no help at all and kept trying to eat the free merchandise! Our students couldn't stop laughing as they reminded Lion that hats go on his head not in his mouth. The reps stayed on to play fun footy games with the students.
If your child would like to join in more AusKick fun, you can find details attached in the sign up flyer below.

Day for Dolly
Talara is GOING BLUE on Do It for Dolly Day, Week 3 Friday 9 May. We are helping grow awareness of Dolly’s Dream programs and services, empowering families, schools, and communities across Australia to take a stand against bullying and protect children and young people from its harmful effects, both online and offline.
Dolly’s Dream was created by Kate and Tick Everett following the shattering loss of their 14-year-old daughter, Dolly, to suicide, after ongoing bullying and cyberbullying. Seven years ago, their lives changed forever when they lost their beautiful daughter Dolly. From that heartbreak, a powerful movement emerged —Dolly’s Dream. Inspired by Dolly’s spirit and fuelled by hope, and Dolly’s favourite colour blue, they set out on a mission to create a kinder, safer world for every child. What began as a personal journey has grown into a nationwide movement of kindness and action, driven by the unwavering support of people like you.
Key Programs and Services
- 24/7 Support Line: In partnership with Kids Helpline, Dolly’s Dream offers a free, confidential helpline for young people aged 5–25, available around the clock via phone or webchat. dollysdream.org.au
- Beacon Cyber Safety App: This app provides tools and resources to help children and families navigate online safety and digital wellbeing.
- School Workshops: Dolly’s Dream delivers online safety and anti-bullying workshops in schools across Australia, aiming to educate students and staff about the impacts of bullying and how to foster a supportive environment.
- Parent Hub: A dedicated space offering resources and guidance for parents to support their children in dealing with bullying and mental health challenges.
- Anti-Bullying Toolkit: This toolkit provides families with state-specific information and resources to manage and respond to bullying effectively.
Throughout Week 3, Year 6 Student Eloise Kettleton has organised the following events for our students, teachers and the entire Talara community to be involved in. It was Eloise’s passion to create awareness, education and conversations to further protect us all from the harmful effects of online and offline bullying.

Get ready to travel back in time to the land of pyramids, pharaohs, and ancient scrolls—because Talara Primary College is transforming the library into a grand Egyptian temple of tales for this year’s Scholastic Book Fair!
In Week 8, students and families will step into a world where books are treasures waiting to be discovered. This year’s Egyptian theme promises excitement, adventure, and a celebration of the timeless power of stories. Secondary School Catchment Information
The Caloundra Coalition of Secondary Schools, wish you and your student a successful, productive and memorable final year of state primary education.
During this year, coalition primary schools will work together with the four local state secondary sites – Baringa State Secondary College, Caloundra State High School, Kawana Waters State College and Meridan State College, to provide a comprehensive and supportive program to assist both you and your student to make the transition to junior secondary schooling. At this early time of the year, we would like to provide you with important information regarding coalition enrolment processes for students transitioning to high school:
- Similar to primary school, all four coalition secondary sites have an Enrolment Management Plan (EMP) and corresponding catchment boundary.
- Parents can determine in which catchment they live by using the EdMap website (http://www.qgso.qld.gov.au/maps/edmap/ ). This is the method used by all coalition secondary schools to determine if a student is living ‘in-catchment’.
- Students are guaranteed enrolment at the school that is indicated by this web site as their ‘in-catchment’ school. This is determined by the student’s residential address. Proof of residency is required when lodging an enrolment application with a coalition secondary school and catchment status will be verified upon enrolment.
- The ‘in-catchment’ secondary school is the site that the student is assumed to be attending for Year 6 Transition Days in June and December.
- If a student has an older sibling already attending at an ‘out-of-catchment’ secondary school, the Enrolment Management Plan allows for the student to enrol at that school as long as certain conditions are met.
- Students may enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school if they are successful in gaining a place in a scholarship program or Program of Excellence at that school.
- Parents may lodge a written Expression of Interest to enrol in an ‘out-of-catchment’ school for consideration by the Principal. ‘Out-of-catchment’ enrolments are granted at the sole discretion of the Principal and are subject to available enrolment capacity at the school after all ‘in-catchment’ enrolments have been accommodated.
- Details of each secondary school’s Enrolment Management Plan can be found on the school’s website.
- Each school has an Enrolment Officer who can be contacted to provide further information and advice.
State schools are great schools! Our secondary schools have planned a wide variety of whole day, before school and after school events that showcase the new and exciting opportunities available to Year 7 students. We urge you to take advantage and participate as much as possible in the Year 6 Transition Program this year. A summary of key dates is included on the back of the attached letter for your reference. Further details for each event will be provided closer to the day.

Born Wired: My Child Is Being Bullied
Creating inclusive, safe and respectful learning environments requires parents and the community to work together with school staff to teach and model positive behaviours to children and young people.
If your child is being bullied or you have concerns about bullying behaviour at school, working together with the school is the best way to find a solution.
You can help by:
- listening to your child—let them share what's happened, how they feel and what help they need
- talking to a teacher, guidance officer or the principal about what’s happened and ask what they will do to help and when
- checking in with your child regularly about how things are going, and taking further action such as following up with the school again if necessary.
You can also let your child know they can get help from:
- Kids Helpline
- Phone: 1800 55 1800
- Chat online with a counsellor
- Headspace
- Phone: 1800 650 890
- Chat online or email
If you need someone to talk to about a parenting related issue, you can contact:
- Parentline
- Phone: 1300 30 1300
- WebChat
Additional resources:
- Bullying No Way — guides families on how to work effectively with schools when a child is experiencing bullying, offering practical tips on communication and collaboration to resolve the situation.
- Support staff — describes the wellbeing and mental health staff available to assist students and families in Queensland state schools.
Cyberbullying – keeping your child safe online
Online safety starts at home. As a parent or carer, you play a vital role in helping your child navigate the digital world.
Here are some practical ways you can guide, protect and stay connected with your child in the digital world:
- Parental controls: use software tools for online monitoring.
- Walk the talk: set reasonable screen time boundaries and prioritise device-free moments for the whole family (even for yourself!).
- Talk about it: start non-judgmental conversations with your child about their online activities to build trust.
- Set family rules: involve your child in setting age-appropriate rules. Display them for the family to access and stick to them consistently.
- Educate on online safety: stay informed about online trends. Teach your child about privacy, risks of sharing personal info, and respectful online behaviour.

Raising kids to thrive
Raising kids can be tough, but it’s important to prepare them for life’s ups and downs. To do that, we need to give them the tools they need to be strong and resilient.
In a nutshell, raising resilient kids means using positive parenting practices, building supportive relationships, giving them opportunities to learn and grow, helping them feel like they belong, teaching them emotional regulation and problem-solving skills, and fostering a positive mindset. By doing all of these things, we can help our kids handle whatever life throws their way!

Student Absences
Please remember to ring the school on our Student Absence Line (5438 3760) or send an SMS to our SMS Absence Line: (0474 195 135) otherwise a note to the teacher the next day is required.
Remember, all student absences need to be accounted for and any unexplained absences require the school to ring home to check. Accounting for student absences is a legal requirement for all schools. Your assistance in providing the relevant information to us regarding your child’s absences daily is appreciated.
