The Principal
The last two weeks have been once again action packed with School Swimming commencing, our Netballers participating in Lightning Cup, our surf team winning the Pacific Pulse Comp, and of course our Prep Information Sessions where we have welcomed in 137 preps who are ready to join our Talara family in 2026. Please let us know with immediately if you have a prep student commencing in 2026.
Thank you to all parents for supporting the return of the yellow forms for class placement considerations for 2026. Your child’s class allocation for 2026 will be emailed home on Thursday 22 January 2026.
School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all parents who responded to the School Opinion Survey which was sent out by the Department of Education earlier this year.
One of our biggest celebrations in this data, is that on every question (27 in total) from the parent survey, Talara Primary College outperforms the average results from the target groups of Qld Primary Schools, All North Coast Region Schools and All Qld State Schools. These amazing results reflect the high levels of collaboration with community and continuous striving to seek Excellence in Education.
Our parents, students and staff expressed satisfaction levels with well-managed student behaviour that outperformed schools in the North Coast Region by 16%.
Our most positive items from our parent group were related to:
* the responsiveness of staff to parent enquiries
* the teachers’ expectations for Talara students to do their best, and
* the well-maintained facilities of our school site.
Significant pride is taken from our student feedback that indicates that our students firmly believe that at Talara Primary College:
* students are encouraged to respect one another (7.3% higher than state average)
* students feel accepted by other students (13.7% higher than state average)
* students like being at school (15% higher than state average)
* students are treated fairly by teachers (14.2% higher than state average), and
* students feel that this is a good school (14.5% higher than state average).
The purpose of this survey is to identify both our celebrations and areas for further improvement focus. Watch your email inbox as I seek your feedback as to how:
* the school can best hear, gather and respond to parent feedback
* we can best work with families to support student learning, and how
* we continue to enhance the positive sense of community and connection at Talara
Updated Blue Card requirements from the Queensland Government regarding for parent volunteers.
The changes to Queensland’s Blue Card procedure now includes the Volunteer Parent Exemption standardised across Queensland.
In summary:
- Parents volunteering for school activities and / or P&C activities that do not include their own child, or where they will have close personal contact with other children, will require a Blue Card.
- Parents volunteering for overnight camps or supervision of a group of students on an excursion will require a Blue Card.
Talara prides itself on a strong sense of community, high levels of parent attendance at school events and enthusiastic parent volunteers supporting school and P&C events. We are supportive of the Qld Government’s new Blue Card requirements for all schools, as the protection and safeguarding of our children as a community is our number 1 priority. It is our aim to support parents to continue to engage with high levels of participation and enthusiasm in our school events and activities.
Examples to illustrate the Blue Card procedure implemented at Talara:
* Parents coming to school to watch the Colour Run as a spectator for their child’s session – Blue Card not needed. Parents volunteering to manage a Colour Run activity station – Blue Card is needed.
Parents without a Blue Card can apply online using the link below — it’s free and typically processed within 24 hours. Blue Cards are valid for two years.
If you need help with this process, please email info@talacollss.eq.edu.au or pop into the office and we can assist you with the application process.
Once received parents are asked to show their Blue Card to the office before volunteering and we can then link you with the school’s Blue Card Portal and / or the P&C’s Blue Card Portal.
Chaplaincy / Student Wellbeing Officer
All schools have the opportunity to utilise specific funding to employ a Chaplain or a Student Wellbeing Officer. When this funding was first initiated, these funds were directed to Chaplains only. Schools now have a choice in employing a Chaplain or a Student Wellbeing Officer. Both roles are required to hold the same qualifications, which is a minimum Certificate IV (or higher) qualification in Youth Work, Pastoral Care, or Chaplaincy & Pastoral Care (or equivalent). Chaplains working in schools are not permitted to evangelise or proselytise, therefore the roles and responsibilities of a Chaplain vs a Student Wellbeing Officer are interchangeable.
Our college has been without a Chaplain for approx. 12 weeks due to complexity in staffing this role. It is important to understand that individual schools do not directly employ a school chaplain or student wellbeing officer. Schools must use an authorised employing authority for employment. Discussion has been hosted at a school and P&C level to move to a model of staffing this position with a Student Wellbeing Officer. A Student Wellbeing Officer presented a model where there are no barriers to a child or family’s interaction due to actual, potential or perceived religious implications. Another local primary school has also currently been without a chaplain for a similar period to Talara Primary College. The proposal is to change Employing Authority and seek a 4 day per week Student Wellbeing Officer with 2 days per week at Talara and 2 days per week at the other campus. The strategy of offering four days per week employment is suggested to attract a quality applicant. Please let me know if you have any feedback on this proposal by Thursday 6 November 2025 – lcutt1@eq.edu.au
As always, reach out if you have any feedback or if I can assist with your child’s learning and wellbeing progress at Talara Primary College. lcutt1@eq.edu.au

P & C News
On Friday, 31 October, the P&C, on behalf of the Talara community, takes great pride in hosting a special lunch to express our heartfelt thanks to all TPC staff. This event celebrates the outstanding contributions they make in creating positive learning experiences for our students and acknowledges their ongoing commitment to Talara.
The support our staff provide for extracurricular activities and community events is what truly makes Talara shine. If you’re able to show appreciation for your teacher on Friday—whether through a handwritten card, handpicked flowers from your garden, or a few kind words—we know it will be warmly received.

Hamper Drive
Christmas is a magical time—a season filled with joy, connection, and cherished memories, especially for children. But for some families in our community, this time of year can also bring added financial pressure and uncertainty. For some children, it even raises the quiet question of whether Santa will visit at all. The Talara P&C is proud to coordinate a Christmas Hamper Drive in partnership with Parcels for Peace, supporting Talara families who may be doing it tough this festive season. Any additional hampers collected will be donated to Parcels for Peace to help even more families in need across our wider community. Our goal is simple and heartfelt — for each classroom to come together and fill at least one hamper bag, or even two if possible!
🎄Each white hamper bag has a shopping list of both essential and festive items to help guide donations attached.
🎄An image of the attached shopping lists has been included (please be aware the flyer suggests Paul’s UHT custard donations, however this brand appears hard to source and any UHT custard is appreciated).
🎄Keep the hamper bag in the classroom, bring in your donation, pop it in the bag, and tick the item off the shopping list.
🎄Please communicate as a class to keep up to date with items that have been donated, and what is still needed.
All filled hampers will be bought to the Polar Express Christmas Movie Night on Friday 21 November, where they’ll be placed under the Christmas tree, to be collected by Murray from Parcels for Peace. Let’s come together to show the strength, kindness, and generosity of the Talara community. With your support, we can make this Christmas brighter for families who need it most. Thank you in advance for your wonderful support🎄

🦷 Tiny Teeth, Big Responsibility! 🪥
Did you know that your child’s baby teeth play a huge role in their future smile? These little teeth don’t just help with chewing and speaking—they also hold space for the adult teeth growing beneath. Early dental care sets the foundation for healthy habits and confident smiles that last a lifetime!
Parents, start with simple steps: brush twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride 1450ppm toothpaste for school aged kids, limit sugary snacks, and schedule regular dental checkups. By making oral care fun and routine now, you’re helping your child build a bright, healthy future—one toothy grin at a time! 😁
🦷 Dr Michelle from Coast Family Dental Currimundi (adj Swimart at Currimundi Markets) will be visiting the Prep and Year 2 children on Thursday 6 November to share some of the handy ways to keep their smile happy and healthy.

Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day – Poppies for Sale
At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war.
Student Leaders will be selling $1 Poppies in Weeks 5 and 6 - Thursday 6 November through to Tuesday 11 November before School on the main path, near the tuckshop leading into Talara.
All money raised is going to Legacy supporting families and children who have lost their loved ones during their sacrifice for their country.

Draw to Remember Project

Once again Talara Primary College Student Leaders and Student Council Members have been kindly asked to implement the Draw to Remember Project at our School. State President, Major General Stephen Day, DSC AM says Draw to Remember forms a key part of RSL Queensland’s mission to share the importance of commemorations like Remembrance Day, while ensuring the legacy of our traditions are passed on to the younger generations.
Last year around 3,500 children from 57 schools took part in the Draw to Remember Project, creating colourful, heart-warming chalk murals to honour our service personnel. As it was a huge success, RSL Queensland is excited to be extending Draw to Remember to primary schools across the state again this year.
It’s a unique opportunity for all Talara children to learn through Art about the significance of 11 November, and work as a TEAM to create various commemorative chalk murals at our school for Remembrance Day.
Thank you to our local Caloundra RSL Queensland branch for free delivery and supply of the materials for Draw to Remember – including chalk and learning resources.
We look forward to leading our student body in the power of artistic expression while deepening our learnings and connection through personal stories of art.

Uniform reminders
The end of year is certainly approaching at great rate. It is often a time of physical growth for your child, so with this in mind, I have included sections of our Dress Code as a reminder. Please read the sections carefully so that your child is able to enjoy the end of year celebrations safely whilst upholding our very high uniform standards. Of particular note are the type of white socks being worn. Please ensure they are visible above the shoe. The short anklet socks are not appropriate. Thank you for your ongoing assistance with this.
At Talara Primary College, the expectation is that each day students will wear one of the agreed Talara Primary College uniforms as outlined below. To cater for all students, the uniform consists of a variety of items that can be mixed and matched along with unisex items that ALL students can choose to wear.
Uniform Options:
- TPC Polo Year P-6
- TPC Sport Short Yearss P-6
- TPC Dress Years P – 6
- TPC Skorts Prep – 6
Other:
- Plain black shoes (no colours)
- Plain white ankle socks (visible above shoe)
- TPC broadbrim hat (caps are not permitted)
- TPC Prep hat band (Prep only)
- NAVY School bag – Talara Logo
Wearing the endorsed TPC monogramed uniform daily, purchased through our Uniform Shop is our strong preference. Should students wear plain navy alternatives purchased elsewhere then the following considerations are to be adhered to:
- Shorts, skorts and skirts must be at a minimum mid-thigh in length
- NO open side splits are to be above mid-thigh height
Jewellery:
Students are permitted to wear only the following items:
- An analogue or digital watch
- One/two small plain stud or small plain sleeper of silver, gold or neutral in colour in the lower lobe of each ear
- Medical alert bracelets
- Religious or culturally significant pendants e.g. signet rings, tiki or crucifix by written request of parent
Students are NOT permitted to wear the following items:
- Facial piercings
- Smartwatches
- Necklaces, bracelets and rings (these are considered a safety hazard and could come in contact with another student causing injury to self or others)
Hair:
To reduce the transfer of head lice as well as to avoid distractions to learning, ALL hair that is at or longer than shoulder length is to be plaited, braided or tied back with long fringes pinned back from eyes. To ensure hairstyles are not a distraction to teaching and learning ALL hairstyles must be conservative. Hair accessories are to be neutral in colour or Talara uniform school colours (jade, maroon, white or navy).
The length of the fringe should not exceed the eyebrows so as not to impede learning or pose a safety risk.
Students are NOT permitted to wear or have:
- Oversized hair accessories (e.g. Jo Jo bows)
- Tracks in hair
- Dyed hair
Makeup and Nail Polish:
No makeup is to be worn to school. Coloured nail polish is not acceptable. Students wearing coloured nail polish will be asked to remove it immediately. Nail polish remover will be provided.

Savannah travelled to Townsville to compete in the Track & Field State Championships for Discus during Week 2 of this term. Although she didn’t place, she delivered some incredible throws and gained valuable experience. Still finding her rhythm in the competitive side of the sport, she had the time of her life and made some great new friends. It’s only the beginning of what’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting season ahead!
A huge congratulations to Savannah!

Talara Boardriders 2025 Pacific Pulse Surf Champions!!
On Friday 24 October, Talara competed in the Pacific Pulse Surf Comp. This is an annual surfing competition run by Pacific Lutheran College. Six schools competed on the day, including Talara Primary College, Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Buddina State School, Mooloolaba State School, OLR and PLC. Talara’s team included Molly and Noah from Year 3, and Maeya, Tala, Ryder, Curtis and Jagger from Year 6.
The event was held at Currimundi Beach in conditions that were really at the limit, in terms of size, for some of our younger surfers. Each surfer contested two heats and participated in a tag team event. All surfers made fantastic contributions towards Talara Boardriders being the champion team on the day. Jagger won both of his heats and was announced Under 12 Boys Champion for the day. Tala was announced Under 12 Girls Champion with Maeya a close second, finishing only 0.5 points behind. Noah also won both of his heats with Curtis winning one of his heats and Ryder surfing well throughout the event. Molly also received the encouragement award, showing great resilience and will power to get back out in the surf for her second heat and winning that heat!
Many thanks to our Super Coach Trent who was on the beach directing kids and assisting in the water. Also, big thanks to our parents for supporting our kids on the day and to Pacific Lutheran College for running the event.

Instrumental Music News
Instrumental Music
In week 2 of this term, there was the opportunity for our beginner instrumental music students to workshop with students from Meridan State College. These beginner workshops allowed for our students to not only accelerate their individual playing and performance skills but also to form friendships with music students from another school which may well last past their primary school years.
Beginner Workshop
On Thursday 16 October (our beginner Talara Band Musicians) and Friday 17 October (our Talara String Musicians) attended beginner workshops held in the Talara Primary College Hall. Students learnt performance skills which are needed to be part of a large ensemble. It was two fantastic days of music making concluding in a concert for appreciative and proud parents.
A big congratulations to our students for their hard work and final performance to conclude the workshop days. Mr Hucknall and Mr Fodor were extremely impressed and very proud of all the students!! A big thank you to the parents who came to support the children at their final performances. We all appreciate your support of our instrumental music program. Keep up the great work kids!!

2026 School Captain Nomination Process
The nomination process for our 2026 School Captains has begun. The Year 5 students have been supported during Year 5 camp where they participated in a Leadership Workshop to better assist them in setting and reflecting on their leadership goals. It is understood that not all students are interested in becoming a school captain, however at Talara Primary College, all Year 6 students become leaders in their own right, just through being the eldest students in our school. The School Captain nomination process will help all students understand their own leadership abilities that will be utilised throughout 2026 in the variety of leadership roles that all Year 6 students undertake.
Please see the attached letter provided to all Year 5 students for key dates and deadlines.

Born Wired: Sharing your child’s information
What you need to know
Images with children in school uniform, their name or indicators of their location in the background can be used by offenders to build a profile and groom parents and children.
Without strong privacy settings, images shared online of their child's first day at school or other everyday images may end up being seen by unintended audiences. Police are continuing to see instances of everyday images of children in the collections of online child sex offenders.
Police are also seeing cases of online grooming starting through what you as a parent, carer or family members have posted online, including instances of offenders targeting them on social media for access to their children. Offenders offering free products for your child to model clothing, is just one example of how this can occur.
There are simple steps you can take to have more control over who can access content of your child and minimise the chance of inappropriate contact.
Strong privacy settings can limit who can access the content on your social media accounts and personal information. Some platforms allow you to undertake a privacy check-up to make sure you are only sharing this information with people who you would want to see it, for example, ‘friends only’.
Community social media pages featuring children should also consider the types of images being shared and who can view them. Settings such as ‘private’ groups or ‘invite only’ with approved followers can help to manage who has access to the page.
Advice for parents and carers
What can I do?
- It’s strongly recommended that you only share images of your children with people you know and trust
- Use strong privacy settings on all social media accounts
- Review your ‘friends’ or ‘followers’ on all social media accounts and remove anyone you don’t know
- If another person is taking photos of your child, consider having a discussion around how the photos will be used and how they will be shared

Growing Young Minds: How to nurture a growth mindset in kids

Every child deserves to believe in their potential.
From “I can’t do this” ➝ “I can’t do this YET” — that simple shift can shape how kids see challenges, mistakes, and themselves. 💡
Many of our teachers here at Talara explore and practise having a growth mindset with their students. It’s a vital lesson to learn that failure is NOT a negative, it’s a learning opportunity. Our values of resilience, persistence, confidence, getting along and organisation align perfectly with this mindset. As we near the end of the year, our kids will need to have a growth mindset as they step into the unknown next year - new classes, curriculum, friendships, teachers etc. It would be beneficial to start having conversations about the new year and how exciting new beginnings are.
What does it mean to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset and why does it matter? In this video, Dr Justin Coulson shows us how important it is to foster a growth mindset in our homes and classrooms.

Student Absences
Please remember to ring the school on our Student Absence Line (5438 3760) or send an SMS to our SMS Absence Line: (0474 195 135) otherwise a note to the teacher the next day is required.
Remember, all student absences need to be accounted for and any unexplained absences require the school to ring home to check. Accounting for student absences is a legal requirement for all schools. Your assistance in providing the relevant information to us regarding your child’s absences daily is appreciated.
