Our School Community Shines in Spectacular Musical Production of Madagascar
What an unforgettable adventure! Our school’s vibrant production of Madagascar – A Musical Adventure JR. has come to a roaring conclusion, and what a journey it’s been! Bursting with energy, colour, laughter, and music, this musical was far more than just a performance — it was a shining example of what makes our Talara community truly extraordinary.
From the first rehearsal to the final bow, this production was the result of months of tireless dedication, creativity, and collaboration across every corner of the school. It was a whole-school event in every sense of the word, and we could not be prouder of what our students — supported by an incredible team of staff — have achieved.
Leading the Pride
A heartfelt thank you must go to our wonderful director, Deb Fritz, whose vision, passion, and leadership brought Madagascar to life with such joy and professionalism. Deb’s direction helped each student shine, and her love for the performing arts was felt in every scene.
Our Extra-Curricular Stars
The performance also showcased the work of our outstanding Extra-Curricular Leaders:
Kate Cuthbert (TPC Dance)
Jodie Calder (TPC Drama),
Angela Street (TPC Drama, Prep Pop, Just Sing),
Sally White (Prep Pop),
Lyndsay Hackney and Alexandra Eccles (Mini Boppers),
Rebecca Clayton and Amy-Leigh Land (Just Dance),
and Lyn Gordon (TPC Choir).
Their ongoing work throughout the year provided students with the skills and confidence that truly shone on stage.
Behind the Scenes Brilliance
The musical magic would not have been complete without the talents of Nicole Kaminski, our amazing vocal coach, who nurtured our students’ voices and confidence with care and precision. A big thank you as well to Nicky Staff, our wonderful makeup artist, whose creativity helped transform our students into the colourful creatures of the Central Park Zoo.
No production is complete without the behind-the-scenes brilliance, and we had the very best in the business! Our costume dream team —Kate Cuthbert, Kylie Lilley, Megan Reid, Carol Finn, and Tammy Millberry — brought the jungle to life with creativity and flair.
A special mention must go to Sofia Wotton, who designed and created the many of the sets and props that set the perfect stage for our story to unfold.
A Whole-School Effort
While we’ve named a few key contributors, it’s important to acknowledge that this production was the result of every single staff member playing a vital role. From sound and lighting to administration, ticketing, rehearsal supervision, costume coordination, make-up assistance, dressing room organisation, and stage crew — this musical was a testament to what we can achieve when we work together.
Thank you to all staff for your unwavering support, whether it was supervising non-participating students, helping backstage, or offering encouragement throughout the process.
A Celebration of Community
Above all, Madagascar was a celebration of our students — their courage, creativity, and camaraderie — and the caring community that surrounds them. The joy on their faces, the cheers from the audience, and the collective sense of achievement is something we will carry with us for a long time.
To everyone who played a part: thank you for making this experience not just possible, but truly magical.
Colour Run
Thank you for your overwhelming support of our school’s 2025 Colour Run. It was an incredibly successful day—our students were smiling from ear to ear with the fun of this event and together, the Talara Community raised over $50,000 for our school, which is a truly outstanding achievement. The replacement of the shade structure over the Year 1 & Year 2 sandspit was the major facility upgrade to target the use of these funds. We have finalised awarding the contract on this project and work is due to be completed prior to the commencement of the 2026 school year. Thank you Mr Bathersby and the P&C team for leading this fun and vibrant school event.
Staffing News
Welcome back to TPC teachers, Michelle Thompson (nee Smith) and Shannon Hansson who have returned to our TPC staff after maternity leave. Michelle is teaching on Year 1 (Mondays and Tuesdays) and Shannon is covering relief teaching days (Wednesday to Friday).
Term 4
We have so many learning experiences and culminating events this term. I encourage you to keep up to date with Facebook, QParents and school emails. As a busy mum, I do know how easy it is to overlook a permission return, event payment or the timing of an event, so these digital platforms are a blessing with those much-needed reminders. In fairness to our staff, it places significant stress on everyone when return of permissions and payments is left until the ‘morning of’ and due to the risk assessment planning and sign off, there are a number of extra-curricular activities where there is limited flexibility to accept payments and permissions after the due date. We appreciate your support in organising these aspects for your child in alignment with the due dates communicated. If there is ever any aspect of challenge with financial aspects, please contact our admin team and we can work together to look at options to support your child’s full participation in all school activities. Have a look at the calendar further down in the newsletter and make sure you have noted the big-ticket events that your family has an opportunity to be a part of. I hope to see lots of parents, carers and families at these special events.
2026 Planning
To assist us to provide the most effective class sizes and class combinations, and do our very best to avoid class changes at the start of Term 1 2026, please let our administration staff know if you have a child that will be enrolling for 2026 or if you are moving from our Talara community and your child will be commencing at a new school for 2026.
Our class numbers are very ‘tight’ at the moment. I am working on a model of 40 classroom teachers for 2026. This means six classes of Prep, Yr 1, Yr 2, Yr 4, Yr 5 and five classes of Yr 3 and Yr 6. Reminder, if you have a prep student for 2026, please contact us with urgency. We have now completed two of our transitions sessions and it would be most beneficial for all our 2026 prep students to engage in a quality transition program.
The ‘Class Formation for 2026’ letter was given out to students on Friday 10 Oct. If your child has not handed you this letter, please contact the office to ensure that you can give input via this form. Our aim is that all students have at least 1 positive learning partner from their list in their 2026 class. Teachers use their professional judgement in assigning your child to the best educational environment. Please Note: Individual teacher preferences are not to be requested. If you have any specific information for consideration, please make an appointment to see the class teacher or Deputy Principal.
If you have made specific requests in previous years, please resubmit these details if you require these factors to be part of our considerations again for 2026 class placement. For any sensitive information, please contact Lisa Cutter - lcutt1@eq.edu.au .
This information must be received by Monday 20 October 2025 to be considered in the class construction process for our 2026 classes.
World Teachers Day
On Friday 31 October it is World Teachers’ Day. It takes a talented and dedicated team to ensure that every day is a successful learning day and happy day of joyful interactions for all our students. I would like to acknowledge the great teachers we have at Talara Primary College who work together to respond to the needs of students, families and our community and bring the gift of education to our students. If you have the opportunity to support your child to write a heartfelt thank you note to their teacher, or you would like to email a teacher that has made a difference for your child, these simple gestures are always appreciated and are a small token to acknowledge the outstanding commitment our teaches bring to Talara.

Marking Guides
Class teachers use Marking Guides to assess your child against the Australian Curriculum aspects of the achievement standard. The achievement standard for each learning area describes exactly what students should be able to know and do. These documents guide teachers to identify the precise knowledge and skills required to achieve an A, B or C (year level expectation) and clearly articulate which parts of the achievement standard are being taught and assessed for each unit of work. Below you will find the English, Science, HASS & Maths marking guides for Term 4.

Term 3 Units of Work for Italian
Prep
Benvenuti! (Welcome!)
This term in Italian, our amazing Prep students will continue building on the foundation language skills they began developing last term.
We’ll be exploring three exciting focus areas:
• Numbers – counting and recognising Italian numbers through songs, games, and movement activities
• Colours – discovering the colours of the rainbow in Italian with fun visual and creative tasks
• Greetings – learning how to say hello and respond to “How are you?” through simple conversations and playful role-plays
Each lesson is designed to be interactive, engaging, and full of opportunities for students to speak, sing, and move as they explore the Italian language.
It’s set to be a bright, joyful, and molto divertente (very fun) term of Italian learning! 🎨🎶
Year 1
In this unit, students will explore language and culture through the theme of families; la famiglia (the family).
Year 1 students will learn to talk about their own family members using Italian words and phrases, including:
• Mamma (Mum) and Papà (Dad)
• Fratello (Brother) and Sorella (Sister)
• Nonna (Grandma) and Nonno (Grandpa)
• Other family members and how they connect together
Students will practise introducing and describing their family, sharing who is in their family, and comparing families with those in Italian-speaking cultures.
Through songs, games, stories, and creative activities, students will build their vocabulary and confidence while using Italian in meaningful, personal ways.
It’s set to be a warm, engaging, and divertente (fun) term of learning all about la famiglia! 💕👨👩👧👦
Year 2
In this unit, students will develop their Italian speaking skills by learning to create and present short speeches all about themselves — io stesso/a (myself). 🇮🇹
Throughout the term, Year 2 students will:
• Learn to introduce themselves in Italian, sharing their name, age, and where they live
• Talk about their likes and favourites, such as colours, foods, and activities
• Describe their family members and interests using simple Italian sentences
• Practise speaking with confidence and expression in front of others
Through games, songs, speaking activities, and creative writing tasks, students will build their vocabulary and pronunciation while preparing their very own discorso (speech) in Italian.
It’s set to be a fun and rewarding term of parlare in italiano (speaking in Italian) with confidence and pride! 🎤
Year 3
This term, Year 3 students will build their confidence and communication skills in Italian as they learn to speak about a range of familiar topics.
The unit will focus on developing clear pronunciation, expressive speaking, and the ability to share ideas in Italian through short conversations and presentations.
Throughout the term, students will:
• Practise everyday greetings, questions, and responses in Italian
• Learn to introduce themselves and talk about their likes
• Create and present short oral pieces using key vocabulary and modelled sentences
• Explore how intonation changes in different types of speech — statements, questions, exclamations, and commands
Through games, role-plays, songs, and interactive speaking tasks, students will develop confidence using Italian in fun, creative, and meaningful ways.
It’s set to be a lively and expressive term of parlare in italiano (speaking in Italian)!
Year 4
Continuing from Term 3, students learn about different cities, monuments and celebrations in Italy. They write about where they would like to go and why.
Year 5
Continuing from Term 3, write and talk about descriptions of outfits, including an outfit of choice. They learn about the importance of fashion in Italian culture. Students write and star in an Italian fashion show.
Year 6
Continuing from Term 3, students advertise the Sunshine Coast as a tourist destination for Italians. Students create a multimodal advertisement to advertise their favourite attraction(s) to a visitor from Italy. They do a voice as part of their presentation.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Year 5 Italian
This Semester Year 5 students have been learning all about Italian fashion! As part of the assessment, students are required to bring in an outfit of choice by Monday 20 October in preparation for the ‘Fashion Show’ they will create over coming weeks.
Students are required to bring in an outfit including sun smart clothing, shoes and at least one accessory. Please put all items into a named bag and leave in your classroom ready for our Italian lesson. Students who do not bring in an outfit will use their school uniform.
Thank you in advance for your assistance with our assessment. It provides for a very fun end to our Year 5 Italian journey.
It’s set to be a lively and expressive term of parlare in italiano (speaking in Italian)!

Uniform reminders
The end of year is certainly approaching at great rate. It is often a time of physical growth for your child, so with this in mind, I have included sections of our Dress Code as a reminder. Please read the sections carefully so that your child is able to enjoy the end of year celebrations safely whilst upholding our very high uniform standards. Of particular note are the type of white socks being worn. Please ensure they are visible above the shoe. The short anklet socks are not appropriate. Thank you for your ongoing assistance with this.
At Talara Primary College, the expectation is that each day students will wear one of the agreed Talara Primary College uniforms as outlined below. To cater for all students, the uniform consists of a variety of items that can be mixed and matched along with unisex items that ALL students can choose to wear.
Uniform Options:
- TPC Polo Year P-6
- TPC Sport Short Year P-6
- TPC Dress Years P – 6

Other:
- Plain black shoes (no colours)
- Plain white ankle socks (visible above shoe)
- TPC broadbrim hat (caps are not permitted)
- TPC Prep hat band (Prep only)
- NAVY School bag – Talara Logo
Wearing the endorsed TPC monogramed uniform daily, purchased through our Uniform Shop is our strong preference. Should students wear plain navy alternatives purchased elsewhere then the following considerations are to be adhered to:

- NO open side splits are to be above mid-thigh height
Jewellery:
Students are permitted to wear only the following items:
- An analogue or digital watch
- One/two small plain stud or small plain sleeper of silver, gold or neutral in colour in the lower lobe of each ear

Students are NOT permitted to wear the following items:
- Facial piercings
- Smartwatches
- Necklaces, bracelets and rings (these are considered a safety hazard and could come in contact with another student causing injury to self or others)
Hair:
To reduce the transfer of head lice as well as to avoid distractions to learning, ALL hair that is at or longer than shoulder length is to be plaited, braided or tied back with long fringes pinned back from eyes. To ensure hairstyles are not a distraction to teaching and learning ALL hairstyles must be conservative. Hair accessories are to be neutral in colour or Talara uniform school colours (jade, maroon, white or navy).
The length of the fringe should not exceed the eyebrows so as not to impede learning or pose a safety risk.
Students are NOT permitted to wear or have:
- Oversized hair accessories (e.g. Jo Jo bows)
- Tracks in hair
- Dyed hair
Makeup and Nail Polish:
No makeup is to be worn to school. Coloured nail polish is not acceptable. Students wearing coloured nail polish will be asked to remove it immediately. Nail polish remover will be provided.

2026 Year 5 BYOx Program
In 2026, we are continuing Talara Primary College’s voluntary “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOx) program. BYOx packs have been sent home with all year 4 students. We ask that you read the information contained thoroughly with your Year 4 student. Families then need to return the necessary completed forms before the laptop can be used at school in 2026.

2026 School Captain Nomination Process
The nomination process for our 2026 School Captains has begun. Year 5 students participated in a parade last week where they were briefed on the School Captain Leadership Process. The Year 5 students are further being supported during Year 5 camp where they are participating in a Leadership Workshop to better assist them in setting and reflecting on their leadership goals. It is understood that not all students are interested in becoming a school captain, however at Talara Primary College, all Year 6 students become leaders in their own right, just through being the eldest students in our school. The School Captain nomination process will help all students understand their own leadership abilities that will be utilised throughout 2026 in the variety of leadership roles that all Year 6 students undertake.
Please see the attached letter provided to all Year 5 students for key dates and deadlines.

Day For Daniel
Day for Daniel is being held on Friday 31 October in Week 4.
As the students participate in the Daniel Morcombe curriculum, the school will hold a walk before school starting at the Currimundi Marketplace outside Ozcare to the school at 8am. It would be fantastic if parents could walk with their child. We will ask that all students and parents assemble by 7:55am so we can as a school walk together unified. The Queensland Police Service will assist in crossing roads where necessary. As this is a significant day, all students can wear a plain RED shirt to school. A Gold Coin donation is asked and all proceeds will be given to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.

Ivy-Rose had an amazing time representing the Sunshine Coast at the State Championships Tournament for 11-12 year girls' rugby league in Townsville. Over the course of four days, she faced fierce competition and exhibited her growing skills in the game. The team's hard work and dedication culminated in an impressive 7th place out of 12 teams. This experience not only allowed Ivy-Rose to develop her athletic abilities but also to bond with her teammates and create lasting friendships. Her journey was filled with excitement and camaraderie, leaving her inspired and eager for future challenges on the rugby field.

In Term 3 Week 10, Angus had the privilege of playing for the Sunshine Coast schoolboys' Cricket team in Bundaberg for 5 days. Master Art – Term 3 Highlights 🎨
In Term 3, 44 of our budding artists had the incredible opportunity to immerse themselves in a full day of creativity and expression during our Master Art event.
The day began with an inspiring collaborative mask-making workshop, where students worked together under the guidance and support of the talented Year 11 Visual Art students from Caloundra State High School. Their leadership, skill, and enthusiasm helped set the tone for a day full of artistic exploration.
After the collaborative session, students split into smaller groups to dive into self-portrait themed art workshops, guided by the wonderfully creative duo — Leonie Wohlsen, our very own Tuckshop chef and artist, and Mrs. Cassar, one of our passionate visual art educators.
It was a fantastic day filled with colour, creativity, and collaboration, where every student had the chance to explore new mediums and express their individuality through art.
A special thank you goes out to the staff and students from Caloundra State High School for generously sharing their time, talents, and artistic energy with us. Their involvement made the day even more meaningful and memorable for our students.
We can’t wait to see where our young artists take their talents next.

National HPE Week
During the first week of September, our school celebrated National HPE Week. National HPE Week is a way to highlight the critical role of Health and Physical Education in the Australian Curriculum and its influence on the learning and development of children. HPE teaches essential life skills: movement, resilience, teamwork, respect, and wellbeing. It’s not just about sport – it’s about equipping every young person with tools to thrive. HPE makes an important and positive difference because it encourages lifelong participation in better health outcomes.
There was so much to celebrate!
Students were able to take part in lots of fun lunctime games including ping pong, cricket, yoga, basketball and ten pin bowling challenges.
Wednesday morning before school students enjoyed a delicious healthy breakfast. This fuelled their running legs, ready for the lunchtime HPE Week Fun Run. All students who signed up for the HPE Week Fun Run won their very own pedometer!
After school, many students enjoyed healthy snacks on their way home, including fruit, Vege Chips and Happy Snacks. Queensland Cricket, Brisbane Heat's Mascot even popped by for photos and to give away cricket balls!
This event was proudly sponsored by Queensland Cricket, The Happy Snacks Company, Vege Chips, Bakers Delight and Woolworths Currimundi. Thank you to everyone who helped organise and coordinate this fantastic event.

Term 3 Student Free Dress Day
On the last day of Term 3 students came dressed in the colours of green, yellow, red, black and white that represented the colours of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe flag. In partnership with VANA Zimbabwe, Talara Student Council annually participates in the Zimbabwe VANA Sponsor Child Program providing financial support that ensures our beautiful and very deserving sponsor child Gracious Banda can buy school uniforms, shoes and other educational resources required to attend school in Zimbabwe.
It is with great pleasure that I announce that our Term 3 Student Dress Day raised a total of $860.55 for our sponsor Child, Gracious.
Congratulations and thank you everyone for your support and huge efforts in making our Term 3 Student Council fundraiser such an amazing success.

Photography Incursion
At the end of last term, students experienced a truly inspiring photography incursion that opened their eyes to the art of capturing the world through a lens. Under the guidance of our special volunteer guest Mr Angell, a talented photographer with a wealth of knowledge and a passion for teaching, students delved into various techniques that will elevate their photography skills to new heights.
Throughout the afternoon session, participants explored essential camera angles, learning how the position of the camera can dramatically change the perspective of an image. They ventured outdoors to capture the beauty of nature, experimenting with the interplay of shadow and sunlight to create mood and depth in their photographs. The excitement was palpable as students discovered how different lighting conditions can transform an ordinary scene into something extraordinary.
In addition to practical techniques, Mr Angell shared invaluable editing tips, helping students understand how to enhance their photos and achieve the perfect finishing effect. With newfound skills in hand, students were eager to apply what they learned, capturing moments that reflect their unique perspectives.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Angell for dedicating his time and expertise to enrich our students' learning experience. Your passion for photography has inspired our budding photographers and left a lasting impression on our school community.
We can't wait to showcase the incredible photos captured during this incursion at our upcoming Talara Art Gallery Week 5. Stay tuned for an exhibition that highlights the creativity and talent of our students!
Thank you once again to everyone involved for making this event a resounding success!

After an action-packed few days away, 4W students have returned from a truly unforgettable Year 4 camp. From the thrill of the Giant Swing to launching catapults and diving into exciting team-building low rope challenges, every moment was bursting with energy, laughter, and learning.
Throughout the camp, Talara students showed incredible resilience, teamwork and a positive spirit that made us all proud. They supported one another through each challenge, grew in confidence and built memories that will last a lifetime.
A big thank you to our wonderful teachers, aides, admin team and supportive parents for making this camp experience possible.
We are sure your children have come home with incredible stories and unforgettable memories they will treasure for years to come!

FUSE Cup Esports ‘Rocket League’ Competition and competition updates!
On Wednesday 8 October, Kayden, Alex, Martin, Arley, Rocco, Azia, Cruz & Sylvie proudly represented our school FUSE Cup Regional ‘Rocket League' Esports Competition, hosted at Matthew Flinders Anglican College.
The teams played with determination, cooperation, resilience and integrity right from the very first heat. Two of our teams worked their way through each heat and Team 1 (Kayden & Cruz) earned themselves a spot in the Grand Final!
It all came down to a deciding match that had everyone on the edge of their seats! Despite giving it absolutely everything, Kayden and Cruz were narrowly defeated and finished as Runners-Up for the Sunshine Coast Division. I couldn’t be prouder of the way all of our teams played, supported each other and demonstrated both our Talara values and those of the FUSE Cup throughout the day. A special mention to Sylvie, who was awarded MVP for the tournament. Congratulations!
In more exciting news, our Just Dance Esports Team has received a wildcard entry to the State Finals on the Gold Coast on November 14 and 15, thanks to their incredible performance at the Sunshine Coast competition earlier this year. What an amazing opportunity to showcase their talent and school spirit on the state stage!
Congratulations to all of our Esports competitors. It has been a wonderful season for the club and I look forward to what is yet to come.

Born Wired: Think U Know – Top 5 Tips
Think U Know have five top tips for you to prevent online child sexual exploitation. Their tops tips are drawn from key advice areas including building safe online habits, technology settings and getting help.
These tips apply to parents and carers of children and young people of all ages.
Advice for parents and carers
Have open conversations, often
The most important tip we can give you is to start talking to your child regularly about their online activities and interactions.
Supervision is essential
This means knowing what your child is doing online, who they are interacting with and what platforms, apps or games they are using.
Be approachable if your child needs help
Coming forward isn’t always easy and your child may feel reluctant to tell you about online issues if they believe they will be punished or have their devices taken away. This also makes children more secretive about device use and at greater risk of exploitation.
Check privacy settings
We recommended that you research and understand app settings, including privacy settings. This could include turning off location settings, setting profiles to private, or turning off chat functions.
Know how to report
If something goes wrong online, it is critical your child is supported. You need to know how to take action and report.

How can I support my child as they transition between year levels at school?
As we approach the end of the school year, many of our students (and parents!) are beginning to think ahead to next year. Moving into a new year level is an exciting milestone, but it can also cause some big feelings during these changes.
A new classroom, different teachers, new routines, and changing friendships can bring both opportunities and challenges.
Acknowledging these changes helps children feel prepared, confident, and supported as they step into a new stage of their learning journey.
How Parents Can Help at Home
- Talk openly: Ask your child what they are excited about and if they have any worries.
- Build independence: Encourage them to organise their bag, homework, or uniform.
- Celebrate strengths: Remind them of what they already do well.
- Normalise feelings: Let them know it’s okay to feel nervous as well as excited.
- Stay connected: Keep in touch with teachers if you notice your child is finding things tricky.
At Talara Primary College, we’re committed to making transitions smooth and positive. This includes carefully considering class placements, having teacher handovers to share important information about each child and ensuring we keep you informed and supported throughout the transition process.
Whether it’s moving up a year level, starting school for the first time or transitioning into high school, it is more than just a change of classroom and environment. It’s a step forward in your child’s growth and development. With support from both home and school, it can be a positive and exciting new chapter. You may like to even ask your child what they are most looking forward to next year.
In this video, Andrew Oberthur discusses how parents and schools can support kids during this transition.
For your convenience, I have also included the access flyer to Parent TV in case you have misplaced it or haven’t accessed the Term 1 Newsletters.
